Default Dear God.

This is one of the greatest rally drivers from the early 80's by the name of Ari Vatanen. His recovery at the 2:00 min mark is impressive.

and watch for the one handed driving whilst keeping the sun out of his eyes with the other on this Pike Peak assault.

That scene reminds me of Lloyd Ruby at LeMans. I forgot which car he drove, but it was one of the 7 Litre GT40s. He set fast lap and it was during the middle of the night of all things. This was well before a chicane was built into the Mulsanne straight. He said during the day the trees scared him. He was alright when it was dark and notable to see the trees well.

Yes that is a classic.

It's a different place now though, all bitumen. Cars are different too

Google the Youtube vid of Ken Block in the Hoonicorn Mustang doing Pikes Peak.
He shades his eyes at the same spot as a tribute to the legendary drive of Ari Vatanen

That was a nice nod to Ari in the Ken Block video.
Not to detract from his exploits but I think it would have taken a bigger pair to drive up that hill on dirt. Long live king Ari

I remember seeing that Pikes Peak footage for the very first time on the IMAX screen at Dreamworld. I think it may have been back in the early '90s?

If you think that footage is good, you should see it on the IMAX screen Very hard to know where to look on a screen that big. The shots taken from the front lip of the splitter were simply mind blowing.

My wife (girlfriend at the time) didnt think much of it though,
