Default Thinking of selling FGX XR8 to buy Lancer Evolution final edition?

Ive been thinking of selling the fgx xr8 for a lancer evolution final edition. Should get away with a minimal changeover.

My reasoning... the fgx xr8 is an enormously powerful car no doubt. I have the auto and it does everything right but on the street its not really that "fun" a drive. Sounds nice, its comfy, handles ok but its true strength is down at the quarter mile. Its strengths are its brutal 80-120km overtaking but It really is a relaxed cruiser most of the time.

On the other hand the lancer evolution, it is one of the best handling cars around, has that on / off turbo hit and its awd. Being a smaller car would "feel" fast. As they dont make them anymore should also hold its value.

On the street I would think the Evo would be a more rewarding drive, it would tear away from a set of lights faster than most cars with its turbo awd performance. Being a smaller car and manual would also be more engaging and fun through twisties..

The alternative is what can I do to my xr8 to make it more "fun" to drive? I bought it brand new and it has only 5000km so a waste to sell.

The manual in the Evo X was tragic. The 5 speed was a disappointment after the Evo 9 manual. I found 1-4 very short and 5th was very tall. Sure it was fun, but just seemed to need more shifts than I'm used to. Not sure if they changed ratios for the final edition.

I'd drop in a manual or trade the FGX for a manual. That would make it a lot more fun!

Rock hard suspension and turbo lag? From what I can recall.

They wouldn't make a great daily driver.

Stay with Ford and take a look at a Focus RS much better than an EVO X.

I would have an RS in a heartbeat at a price I could afford and be assured to suit daily/family needs

EVO X is fun, but you get over it quick. Brother had one (in auto), handled like on rails compared to the Falcons, but seats are too hard, suspension too hard, engine is doughy below 3500, interior is (very, very) basic, and the brakes felt wooden (might have been the pads in there though).
Would never swap my XR8 for one, although my wife has an STi which gives the jap-turbo jollies when in need, so effectively got the best of both worlds.
Also, as said above, the 5-speed box has a moonshot 5th gear, and you only ever use 1-4 on most occassions where you actually need some pick up.
Personally, you'd be better off with an STi or Focus RS, bit more up-to-date and hence liveable, not just one-trick ponies.
Other option is to keep the XR8, and find yourself an earlier model EVO for half the price as the EVO X - same heart, different bodies.

V8 in auto = boring.

Buy the Evo, you wonít regret it

I was in a similar position 2.5 years ago.

We had a mildly worked 315 rwkw FG turbo.
Was great car but really only quick in a straight line as long as it was dry.
Ended up selling it to a P plater from the ACT.

We decided on pre-ordering a Mk3 Focus RS.

We miss the old FG, but would not go back after owning the RS.
It is an exceptional car - especially on back roads. Think Putty road to the Hunter Valley or The great Alpine Road.
Its fine for daily duties - Mrs Cheech does the school drop off and shopping with it.
However I do find it a bit tiresome on long freeway trips but we also have an MU-X for get-away's and towing.

Get a Focus RS, put a tune & exhaust on the FGX.

Then you have the best of both worlds - Cruiser V8 with unmatched speed & sound, and a hot hatch to throw round the windy bits on weekends.

Mind you the ride in a Focus RS is just as stiff if not possibly stiffer than an Evo X. Sat in a Focus ST couple of years and it thought it was stiff, but the RS is a notch above that IMO.

I have never driven an evo but all the online reviews say its a spectacular classic car in the handling department, absolute benchmark and plenty powerful when on boost. Though they say last model we t backwoods on gearbox and cheaper recaros.

My issue with the evo is it looks exactly like a $19990 lancer. Most people wont pick it out as the evolution (which is a very special car). Just looks like a lancer.

My fgx already has exhaust and tune, i dont think it will become any more fun than it is.

I called up ford about focus rs, they want my xr8 and $15k for a new focus RS. Nahh No way. If i get get away with a few thousand maybe

Every car eventually loses the ‘fun’ appeal. However, I’m certain the feeling of an XR8 has longer lasting effects than the lancer.

As for it cornering better, like its on rails, I doubt there’s many roads in Australia that the XR8 can’t take at 20 or 30 over the limit.

Makes no sense financially. Like in 10-20 years which care is going to be worth money?

I’m betting on falcon values being better in the long run

Why are you asking us ? The only one who needs to be happy or has the right to decide is you . No-one else matters except the missus if you have one . If you buy an EVO do it with no regrets is all I'll say . Same applies if you choose to keep the XR8 . No regrets .
