This is ususally the mirror mount rattling. I had to tighten mine when the sub went in. It doesn't help that its mounted upside down.

Sounds like you don't get much for your pre-delivery $$$ either on a lot of them? Stuff like the bonnet alignment should be fixed before you even get the car.

Surely they have a very good idea of the common quality type issues by now and could fix most before delivering the Focus?

I'm with you. 6500kms and the only issue is that it runs a little rich. Going to take it in for a Christmas service before I go away, so should fix that.

I run mine on Premium Unleaded with the 3rd tank being BP Ultimate and it runs really well. Little bit thirsty, but that is prob the way I drive!

Drove the car on the weekend with the driver and 2 others in the car, and my god, I've never heard the thing ping so hard im my life! I was almost affraid to drive it home it was pinging so bad, so its going back in on wednesday morning and I've made it pretty clear im not driving it home untill its fixed.

Heads will role, god only knows the internal damage its started after months of this shit.

But its the old thing you cant go in there all hot headed cause you'll get no where so, theres a very delicate dance of me not throwing stuff at the service counter and trying to convey my disapointment in the service.

I spoke to the dude on the phone who asked how many k's (35,000), has it been looked at before (yes, 4 times now), and his response... 'should have been fixed, they must have got one of the younge blokes to look at it each time and they must have stuffed it up, ask for me and I'll fix it on the spot' (urge to kill rising)...

Oh yeah for sure, I'll be posting on wednesday night either way, but it may not be telling untill the few days following the fix if it'll still ping, sometimes it takes a few days for the ecu to set its levels up again.

Let's make guesses and test our knowledge..

Spark plug heat range
Knock sensor faulty
Oxygen sensor faulty
Low fuel pressure

and the winner is.....

no fault found...

lol

Well Revs I recon you might be right, my wife just picked the car up and she asked what the problem was the answer:

"Ford are aware of a problem with them, caltex fuel normally fixes the problem, we check the settings and everything was within tollerance"

While my wife is telling me this on the phone Im starting to wish I had gone down to pick it up, I mean, Caltex fuel normally fixes the problem, WTF?, lets for a moment entertain the thought that he wasnt not talking out his ****, does that mean that unless I fill up at caltex and only caltex I run the risk of damaging my engine because of the 'consistent' pinging..?

Looks like its a letter to the service manager, mannn I'll never buy a new car again.

So much for the younge guys are working on it, and we'll sort it out on the spot, grrrr, I can get my 250rwkw 1981 carby XE falcon to run without pinging surely a ****weak 2006 model EFI focus can do it standing on it head.

Wow... Another case, I hope Ford is monitoting this group.

Hands up if your LS is pinging AND is a manual?

After abusing and lugging mine on a couple of different fuels I swear I can't detect any detonation - the ECU knocks it off almost imediately when it did do it just the once on 91 RON, and I had to really abuse the thing like bunny hop and tramp the throttle.

What I did detect however was gearbox backlash when lugging in too high a gear, kinda sounds like loud pinging but definately gearbox related not engine combustion.

Maybe some are hearing that???? I hope it's that simple anyway.

My LS auto pings on RON91, but seems to depend on speed, i.e. accelerating hard from ~70KMPH,the noise frightens the cr@p outta me, but flooring it at substantially lower or higher speeds seems to be OK....well, most of the time.
Is there some sort of "adaptive" programming of the ECU re advance /retard that can get itself screwed up with different drivers with different driving habits?

NR

The thing is....
When you have worked in a dealership you may understand.
On the Focus, the timing cant be adjusted, there is no carb idle screws ect. We can only do what Ford tell us and it does say in your hand book to run 95ron fuel. If you already are, then there is an issue. If the dealer can't fix it, ring Ford CRC and talk to them. Also at a dealer, if you go in and jump up and down and scream at people and chuck shit around ect you wont get any help, not saying that you did.....

Also as a mechanic, you are 1/2 way through a job and your service advisor comes over going "how much longer? I have another job going at (insert time)"
Also it is easy to blame 'young blokes' for screwing up ect, but sometimes its the 'young blokes' that work out the fixes and do a better job than some of the mechanics that have been in the trade for 10-15 years.

Note, I have been in the trade 6 years, I am young but not the youngest by a long shot at work.
Rant over.

I hear ya there ED, but if you read my posts you'd realise that that was a quote from one of the mechanics at my local ford, not me. We wun the car on basically what ever the most expensive petrol is that we can get at the servo if it optimax is 95 the we are putting in 95ron. You are right to say that jumping up and down doesnt get you anywhere and I also pointed that out in one of my previous posts.

Again if you read back a few posts you'll see that I was advised that ford is 'aware' of the pinging problem.

all in all I agree 100% with what youve said there becuase its pretty much exatly a parrot of what I've all ready mentioned, have a read. Cheers.

I am not having a go at you in any way, just trying to show the dealer side of things. I didnt exactly make it clear as to whom I was pointing to.
We get the older guys blaming the young blokes to customers too.

Maybe mine don't ping because I use 10% ethanol blend... Either 95 or 98 RON depending on what pump I can get to.

I know I know some here hate ethanol but I've done 15,000 Km on the stuff with absolutely no issues apart from paying less.

Why don't the pinging guys try out a few tanks of 95 E10???

Ok.. what are Ford doing I wonder?

They would hate to get a spate of detonated engines one would think...

as they used to say in the 80's - TISM
