Be careful I found my fuel indicator is not linear and towards the bottom end you have less fuel than indicated on the gauge then up pops the low fuel light and as luck always turn out no where near a service station between Sydney and ACT!

My first full tank netted 860 klm at 7.25 l/100 (7.2 on convers). 70/30 highway driving.

Still had about 100 dte too.

Stoked!

Here's info on my last tankfuls:

Trip (km) Fuel (L) L / 100km Convers L/100km Average km/h
331.9 30.90 9.31 - -
758.4 64.90 8.56 8.00 32
570.3 42.04 7.37 7.60 35

667.8 48.56 7.27 7.60 36

353.3 28.07 7.95 7.80 43
947.8 57.90 6.11 6.60 91

(Sorry, tried to line up all the columns but wouldn't do it. 3rd column is L/100k's, 4th is Convers+ reading)

Best so far 6.11 L/100km. Adelaide to Wagga Wagga - 950 k's on one tank and still had 12 litres to go! (or 46.2 Miles per Gallon for you old schoolers!). Gotta be happy with that!

A whisker above 1850 rpm at 100kph and afew rpm above 2000 rpm at 110 - but that is in top gear and I've noticed that the car doesn't select that until you have nudged above 100 kph. Once in top gear it will stay there if you let the speed drop back to the 100 kph mark.

Obviously you can achieve an earlier shift if you use the quasi manual option on the gearbox.

The rpm figures are also dependent on the tyre tread depth.

By my calculation the unloaded radius of the standard 235 17R45 tyre is as close as damn it to 322 mm take off a tread depth of 7 mm and that is 2.2% smaller radius and would be reflected in the rolling radius figures (a bit higher in fact). So the engine rpm for a given actual speed wil be higher.

But you will not notice this variation if you rely on the car's intruments because the speedometer will be reading high by a similar % figure.

So far as fuel economy goes, since the lost long term average was recovered the car has returned 6.8 l/100km, we just put 1000 km on the car with a trip to Victoria's high country and prior to that the average was 7.1 l/100 km. the use on the trip was 5.4 l/100km so country travel is the way to go !

With the instantaneous fuel readout I was able to get some idea about the "sweet spot" and it is in the 95 thru 100 km/hour range so long as you have nudged the car into top gear. In this speed range the fuel usage is of the order of 4.5 l/100km in still air on the Hume Freeway between Euroa and Benalla. Lift the speed to 110 kph and the economy figures drop to 5.1 - 5.2 l/100km.

So the reason I travel at the limit is to avoid that small %age of HGV pilots who try to bully you into going more quickly by tailgating at 100 kph - which is a real problem on the Western Highway when we travel to Adelaide.

After 5,000 km the fuel consumption on my MB since the last fill is 6.7 l/100km. I can get close to 6 on a trip, but the engine takes forever to warm up at this time of year which I suspect hurts the day to day consumption.

Pretty happy with this as $100 of diesel gets me about 1,000 km, although in NZ we have to pay road user charges which adds another $44 to the cost.

I've got an MC wagon on order, due sometime in August.

As a comparison it'll be interesting to see how it does my existing 2001 Camry (4cylinder 2.4L).

Driving to / from work for the last 2 x weeks.

704km - 58.50 litres = 12.03km/l
724km - 59.44 litres = 12.18km/l

It's mostly freeway running but should make an interesting comparison.

We managed 6.1 litres per 100km for the first tank (2,500km on the car when we picked it up). That was 300km of highway driving the rest was regional city driving.

No highway driving on the current tank and we won't get that sort of economy but it won't be far off.

ETA: These figures for a MC wagon.

why on earth did ford under gear these cars??
shurely they could have gone taller say 1300rpm/110kph.

I did a similar test in my Focus last weekend returning from Melb to Sydney.

Sitting on 99-100km/h, I averaged 4.2-4.3 L per 100.

Sitting on 105-106, the average jumps to 5.1-5.2 L per 100.

Cruise at 112, the average jumps to 5.5-5.6 per 100.

Very big difference!

If i'm in no rush, the car sits on 99 and it just lopes along with minimal fuss and minimal consumption.

Don't know if you were being sarcastic there, but if not I agree with you. When in 6th my car pulls reasonably well from 1400rpm on the flat.

Still wondering why my car (LV TDCI Focus) needs to sit at almost 2000rpm at 100 when even the petrol Cruze I drove spun slower at the ton???

I think all Aussie cars should have a very tall 6th / top gear, suited to flat freeway driving say 1500-1600rpm/100 (perhaps have it as an option?). Need to go faser in a hurry, drop a gear or 2.

The fuel savings would be insane at those revs.

my cruze diesel A6 sits 5th 1850rpm/110kph ~ 6th 1200rpm/110kph
and it take's a decent hill for it to drop down to 5th.

and no not sarcasm, just a question.. i can understand a petrol engine needing those rpm's, but a diesel!!

YOUR KIDDING..... They produce more power and torque, yet have a lower average consumption (if memory serves) over Focus... Now I know why.

I hate the fact my Focus spins so fast in top gear, seems there was no real benefit to a 6 speed when I know it could handle spinning MUCH slower on the open road.

As long as you don't encounter head winds that knocks fuel economy on the head. On my way to the ACT a few weeks back it was as if I had a caravan on the back of the car

I tried cruising at 100-105 km/h and managed 5.8 l/100km on a recent drive from Auckland to Hamilton. It certainly helps the consumption if I slow down slightly.
The odo is now reading over 6,000 km and the engine is definitely running better - it will happily cruise at 1,500 rpm in 5th and 6th. I still don't really like having an auto diesel though.

That's pretty impressive Mike.

I recently managed 5.6 l/100km, which is 50 mpg. Filled up about 100 km south of Auckland and drove at 100-110 km/h. It's mostly motorway but has some hills.

Diesel's in my experience don't reach their optimum efficiency until at least 15,000 km's but if you want to have a bit of fun next time you're going to Hamilton and back try crusing all the way there and back at 85 k.p.h. and see what a remarkable result that netts you. Tried that in the Merc once and although its a much bigger and heavier car running a six cylinder diesel it was in the low 6's from memory, which is damm good for a 2,000 kg car.

Yeah it's just getting better as the kms increase - 8,500 now. If I sit at about 1750 rpm in 6th (about 90 km/h) the fuel consumption is about 5l/100 km. Plus the torque is getting better - it will happily pull away from 1500 rpm in 6th now without changing down. I just really wish it was a manual.

One thing I don't like is how it sounds when cold. We've had some very cold weather in NZ this week and the engine really rattles with anything more than light throttle until it starts to warm up. But how cold does it have to be before it needs the glow plugs to start?

Mate, tell me about it, its farking cold allright. I wouldn't worry about the usual diesel chatter its quite normal. Very latest euro diesel's have the new multi phase pzizo injectors that are a major help in smoothing out the clatter as they inject several times during the combustion cycle but then again they're a lot more money and to my mind the new Titanium Mondeo looks like a very useful peice of kit with all that technology for very reasonable money.
Do they have a diesel particulate filter and if so have you had any problems with it ?

Yes all Mk 4 Mondeo diesels have a DPF. No probs at all so far, I can't tell when the regen happens but most of my driving is open road.

It does seem sensitive to what fuel you use. Given that most of our diesel comes from the refinery at Marsden Point, I have no idea why it ran best on a tank of Shell.

You'll be fine then. The problems happen when they're constantly used around town and don't get the chance to heat up the DPF enough to effect a proper and complete regeneration cycle. My GT-P seems to run smoother on Shell 95 fuel too or maybe its just the feel good Kiwi ownership thing now, who knows...

95% of our running is around Auckland so that was inconsistent with the proper operation of a DPF and we had to get it removed from the Merc diesel.
