The next major remake of the Ford Mondeo has just been confirmed for Australia.

The next major remake of the Ford Mondeo has just been confirmed for Australia. It gets a major tweak to the styling, extra comfort and improved diesel efficiency, but will not come with the latest ECOboost engine used in Europe.

Ford Australia is still finalising its plan but says it will have cars in showrooms before the end of the year. Pricing is not decided. "We will get the car late this year, in November or December," says Sinead McAlary, spokesperson for Ford Australia.

"We'll be getting a lot of the technical and visual updates on the Mondeo but we'll be remaining with the current powertrain. At this point in time we're not taking the ECOboost engine."

The Mondeo will arrive after Ford's new performance heroes, the Focus RS and Falcon GT from Ford Performance Vehicle, to add extra showroom punch with the Thai-built Fiesta baby car.

It has been updated in Europe as part of a total overhaul of the Ford range there, with what the company describes as "continuing evolution of Ford kinetic design".

Like most newcomers these days it gets LED lamps, but there is also a new bonnet, new tail lamps and a different look to the grille. The cabin has been upgraded as Ford works to improve the perceived quality against rivals such as Audi and Volkswagen, including an overhead console on some models.

A range of driver-assist technologies are now fitted for Europe - including blind-spot monitoring and a speed limiter - but there is no news on their availability in Australia. Ford says it is expecting a second-half sales surge driven by its new models and is happy with results for the Mondeo, even ahead of the upgrade.

"The car is going quite well. We've been hamstrung a little by supply, particularly with the diesel engine in the wagon. We had good sales in August but we think that the update, and with full supply of the diesel wagon, will give us a major lift," says McAlary.

I might be on the wrong tram, but to bring out the car without the driver's aims would be harder than with them.
Straight off the line is easier than trying to modify something for our small market.

That topic is not going to help the poor guy.. It is just a very very minor extoior exchange. The one in that topic is the brand all new one due out in 2-3 years..

No Ecoboost, what a surprise. The 2.3 petrol is no longer available in Europe, so Ford Oz must be pretty desperate to protect Falcon sales if they're going to continue with it.

The new range will be announced in NZ in January. But hopefully Ford NZ will actually want to sell Mondeos and we will see the Ecoboost here.

Well yes, you have a point. But they're quite happy to stop making the Falcon wagon and try to sell the Mondeo wagon instead. And is the Mondeo really competing against the Falcon? It certainly doesn't here, where it is priced to compete against mid-sized cars like the Mazda 6.

And if Ford had updated the Falcon wagon, I'd be happily driving one now.

No Ecoboost...as expected.
My bet is you might see it in Mondeo *after* it appears in Falcon next year.
Hopefully, a lack of a performance model Mondeo will help to keep the used/outgoing XR5 values high (self interest...)

So, back to just Snoozin' in my Silver....XR5.

Yes, it's basically the current model with upgraded engines and a mild facelift. I doubt that we'll see the 2.2 diesel as it's manual only and it sounds like Ford Oz won't use the Ecoboost petrol. But the upgraded 2.0 diesel and Powershift box should be a good drive.

FORD Australia is keeping its powder dry for next year’s vital Falcon upgrade by holding back the EcoBoost turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine from the facelifted Mondeo to be introduced next month.

The Blue Oval understandably wants maximum impact for the high-output EcoBoost engine’s local introduction as it promises to become the Falcon’s environmental answer to Holden’s 3.0-litre SIDI Commodore.

Consequently, a host of new driver safety technologies and the introduction of a dual-clutch transmission highlight Mondeo’s midlife facelift, which comes little more than a year after the current model was launched in Australia.

Ford will unveil the MC series Mondeo line-up at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney next month alongside the new FPV range and the world debut of the all-new Ford Ranger ute.

Mondeo will go on sale from November, although the range-topping Titanium models will not be available until December. Pricing (which currently starts at $30,540) is expected to be announced at the Sydney show media day on October 15.

External styling changes are very mild, as revealed at the Mondeo’s world premiere at the Moscow show last month, but the interior comes in for a more significant upgrade over the MB series that was launched in Australia in July 2009.

Although Australia will have to wait for the EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine – which will ultimately join the local Mondeo line-up some time after the Falcon launch – we will get the new dual-clutch automatic transmission it was launched with in Europe last month.

However, the dual-clutch ‘Powershift’ six-speed auto will only be available in the range-topping Titanium wagon fitted with the 2.0-litre Duratorq turbo-diesel engine, a model that Ford Australia confirmed back in May.

Safety innovations developed by Ford’s former luxury arm Volvo and fitted as standard on range-topping Mondeo Titanium models include a camera-based lane departure warning system that alerts the driver if the car unintentionally wanders out of its lane.

Other advanced safety features include an on-board driver drowsiness detection system, a switch that allows the driver to limit the car’s maximum speed when driving, a blind spot information system (BLIS), automatic high-beam headlight selection and LED daytime-running lights.

Ford Australia President and CEO Marin Burela said he was delighted to introduce these enhancements for the Mondeo.

“The Ford Mondeo is already an excellent example of balancing the right mix of equipment and technology with the right price in a car that is beautifully designed and packaged,” he said.

“These generous additions simply build on this winning formula. Despite its ongoing sales growth, now is the right time to make it an even more compelling choice for new-car buyers.”

Ford said that external changes include new wheels, a new bonnet design, new upper and lower front grilles, new front and rear bumper bars, revised tail-lights, mirror-integrated indicators, new tailgate and deck-lids, and glass-mounted antenna (in place of a roof-mounted unit, but the overall affect is still subtle.

Interior changes include revised decor, and passenger seat lumbar support, sliding centre console cover and (from February) power rear windows in base models.

With the turbocharged XR5 being deleted because Ford has lost the rights to the five-cylinder Volvo engine, all but the flagship Titanium diesel wagon are powered by Ford’s familiar 2.3-litre Duratec petrol four-cylinder engine, which develops 118kW of power and 208Nm of torque.

There is no sign of the new 147kW 2.2-litre turbo-diesel that will be part of the European line-up, leaving the local flagship with the 120kW/340Nm 2.0-litre ‘Duratorq TDCi’ turbo-diesel introduced here in May, matched to the new twin-clutch six-speed auto.

How long ago was that black Mondeo wagon with the 2.2L TDCi engine shown at the Melbourne Motor Show? 2009, 2008?

While the wagon is indeed awesome, that engine was the most exciting part of that display...

Alternative model announcement:

"Ford releases new Mondeo series. Only the top-of-the-line Titanium will be available with the new Powershift dual clutch gearbox, and the new fuel-efficient 2.0 Ecoboost and 2.2 turbo diesel will not be available in Australia. The obselete 2.3 petrol and conventional 6-speed auto will power most of the Mondeos sold in this country, as Ford can no longer sell this drivetrain in Europe due to carbon tax issues."

Hopefully Ford NZ will not be constrained by the unwillingness of Ford Oz to actually sell Mondeos, and we will at least get the Ecoboost here.

Yep that's the one, Feb 2008! Two and a half years... *sigh*

Disappointing, but frankly what competition is there? Passat and Octavia? It's not like the current 2.0L is uncompetitive, it's just not outstanding like the 2.2L would be...

Or would that possibly eat away at Territory diesel sales, once the thing finally gets released?

Agreed the C5 type of diesel would be great.
But you have to remember that the C5 and Mondeo are in totally different market segments - both buyer demographics and price ranges.
Also, the higher power diesel may not have 'excess' production capacity to warrant trying to bring it to Oz as a regular product line ('tho i can't see how a few hundred units a month for Oz would make a dent in Euro prodn volumes).
....another missed opportunity IMHO.

Sad too about the lack of Ecoboost for Mondeo just yet.....after Falcon (as I predicted on 12 Sep!!)
With this one, I would like to think Ford Oz have there marketing back to front. They could bring it in for Mondeo, tell/show people how great it is, and then make it (also) available in a rear drive platform aka Falcon.
....another missed opportunity IMHO. (echo echo echo...)

Guess I won't need to dreamily desire the unobtainium whilst driving in my boosted 5-pot !!
....And still no obvious perfmance-biased model.

So, back to Snoozin' in my Silver....XR5.

I sent an enquiry to Ford about when we would be blessed with the MC Mondi with the 2.2 ltr TDCi engine and received the following response

Ford Australia has no confirmed plans at this stage to expand our current product range to include the Ford Mondeo with 2.2L TDCi engine.
Your comments will be directed to our design teams who will utilise this feedback to help us continually build excellent products for the future.

I pointed out that the design team at Ford had nothing to do with it - it was the strategic marketing group. I also mentioned that Ford are likely to loose current owners if they don't bring in the latest engines. No point dumbing down a great car to save the local product.

Response was:
"Ford Australia is committed to providing the highest level of quality on all its vehicles and components, as well as continually improving the level of satisfaction of our customers. Your comments will be directed to the relevant departments who utilise this constructive feedback to help us continually build excellent products for the future."

It is real stubborn head in the sand stuff.
Looks like I am off to VW. Their engine produces 350 Nm!

You'd have to conclude that Ford are simply trying to protect Falcon sales. What other reason could there be for the delay in making the diesel wagon available, when we had it in NZ in April 2008?

Fingers crossed for the Ford NZ announcement in January. Otherwise I will probably keep my wagon until the new Mondeo in 2012.
