Ford laser fuel consumption issue
3 Attachment(s)
Hi All,
Im new here on the forum and I recently bought a 1990 Laser KF, 1.3 SOHC. Not used to Carbs that much, But i assume fuel consumption should be better than what i am getting right now? I get 5.8 Kilometers per liter. Checked the plugs, running Champions, looks in decent condition, but looks white. Which means its running lean. Not rich.. Isn't it? I've checked the air filter, looks quite clean. anything else i can check for? checked for a MAF sensor, doesn't have one so i assume carby engines dont need / use one? Car doesn't over heat or anything.. Moves quick enough, considering its a 1.3 liter. Please advice guys... Thanks... Also guys, Could someone post a picture of the carb setup under the air intake? ive been trying to figure it out as some of the vacuum lines are not plugged in. and im not sure where it goes as i couldn't find an image online. Please guys & Gals.. really need help/advice here... Ian. |

Re: Ford laser fuel consumption issue
It's a little difficult to diagnose remotely. Are you sure that's 5.8 km/l? Thats's 17l/100 km which is more than hard driven GT-P!
To answer your other questions: There is no MAF on the carb engine. Check the ignition timing, points and distributor cap for wear. I've got a WSM at home so will check over the weekend for an image of the vac lines. Cheers Russ |
Re: Ford laser fuel consumption issue
Thanks for the reply Russ. Yes unfortunately i get 5.8KMPL. I used to drive an Automatic Mustang GT 4.6 when i was living in the land of Camels and i used to get 7 kmpl most of the time. Horrible MPG right now on the Laser.
The fuel Filter was completely blocked and i changed it 2 days ago. Will have to check mileage again, although i dont think the fuel filter makes that much of a difference. Air filter is getting changed this weekend even though its not to dirty. Plug gaps are at 1.0 MM, thought to reduce it to 0.90MM. Only thing i can think of which might be the issue are the vacuum lines. Doesn't appear right to me somehow. |
Re: Ford laser fuel consumption issue
The one pointing with an arrow, concerns me more, as this seems connected to the 2nd butterfly valve which doesn't open.
The 2nd circle, is another vacuum line connected to the back of the carby, which is not connected to anything. Also, the auto choke is stuck open, and the red cable from it is not plugged into anything, couldn't find anywhere to plug it into either. I think it should be plugged into the alternator? But no opening in the plugs at the alternator. would have removed the choke and checked it, if i knew where to plug it after checking it. |
Re: Ford laser fuel consumption issue
Been through both my KC-KE and KF-KH manuals and they don't cover the 1.3L engine - indeed the brochures for the KF don't mention it either with the entry unit listed as the B6 1597 cc (1.6L) SOHC and the DOHC EFI version of the same engine.
Cheers Russ |
Re: Ford laser fuel consumption issue
Wow ... I'd say the 1.3 is a carry-over from an earlier model ..... and going on those numberplates ... not an Australian-spec Laser.
