Fuel Efficiency Gains for Refreshed Ford Territory

TS, TX and Titanium gain new equipment and improved connectivity

SYNC2™ with Emergency Assistance standard across the range

MELBOURNE, 07 Oct., 2014 – The SUV that redefined the SUV segment in Australia has scored fuel efficiency gains for the 2014 petrol models.
While the existing 4.0-litre in-line six cylinder petrol engine and 2.7-litre V6 TDCi engine carry over in the 2014 SZ Territory Mk II, Ford has been able to improve fuel efficiency on the petrol versions thanks to a new, more fuel efficient, light-weight six-speed gearbox.
The new ZF 6HP21 six-speed gearbox features the same driver-style features as before.
The petrol SZ Territory MkII TX now achieves a 3.9 per cent fuel economy improvement (10.6 L/100km to 10.2 L/100km^) while the Territory SZ Mk II TS and Titanium petrol models have improved 1 per cent (10.6 L/100km to 10.5 L/100km^).
The combined fuel economy figure for the already frugal 2.7-litre V6 TDCi models remains the same, at 8.2 L/100km^ (TX TS, Titanium RWD) and 8.8 L/100km^ (TX AWD) and 9.0 L/100km^ (TS and Titanium AWD).
As previously, customers will have the choice of three variants – TX, TS and Titanium – in either rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive and five or seven seat configurations (3rd row optional on TX).
Falcon and Territory Vehicle Line Director, David Wilkinson, says the SZ Territory Mk II remains Australia’s only locally engineering and designed SUV. “Our customers love it and for the 2014 Mk II model, we’ve made sure to improve the SUV in the areas that matter most to our legion of owners – fuel efficiency on the petrol models and improved technology with the addition of the new SYNC2™ system across the range,” he said.
“The 2.7-litre V6 diesel is already well known as a frugal power-plant and it’s the most popular choice for our customers, but our focus was on improving the efficiency of the petrol six-cylinder, which still remains one of the smoothest engines around.”
The in-line six cylinder 4.0-litre petrol engine in the Ford Territory develops 195 kW at 6,000 rpm and 391 Nm at 3250 rpm while the common-rail TDCi engine develops 140 kW at 4,000 rpm and 440 Nm at 1,900 rpm#.

The Power of Voice
SYNC2™ offers customers three distinct ways to interact with the system, through the high-resolution 8-inch colour touch screen, physical buttons and advanced voice control.
The driver can control the Territory's entertainment system, climate control, satellite navigation (on Titanium) and linked mobile devices - like compatible smart-phones - with voice commands.
Split into four coloured quadrants, SYNC2™ makes it easy for drivers to quickly and intuitively access the system they wish to adjust through large, easy to access buttons on the new high-resolution touch screen.

Transmission – ZF 6HP21 6-speed automatic transmission
The light-weight ZF 6HP21 automatic transmission will be used on all petrol Territory models. The 6R80 transmission carries over on the 2.7-litre TDCi common rail turbo diesel engine.
In customer terms, the 6HP21 used in petrol Territory's has small improvements over the 6HP26 – lighter and more fuel efficient, with the same driver-style features as before.
This light-weight unit with its slightly lower torque capacity when compared to the ZF 6HP26 is an optimised match to the 4.0-litre normally aspirated six-cylinder engine characteristics with the well-known seamless gear changes that contributes not only to improved driver comfort and control, but also delivers livelier performance through shift calibration and better fuel economy. It has ‘next generation’ controls and valve body that also contribute to the fuel economy improvement.

The features of the six-speed automatic transmission include:

- Driver recognition/characterisation: Matches transmission performance to the driving style by considering acceleration rates, brake application and cornering speed to ensure the vehicle is in the right gear, without undesired gear shifts.

- Enhanced Adaptive Shift Strategy: Transmission modes adapt according to speed and load. Modes include: economy, performance, sports, up-hill, down-hill and trailer towing.

- Up-shift prevention at zero throttle: Prevents up-shifts beyond 2nd gear with zero accelerator pedal application to prevent a running away feeling when travelling down steep hills from rest.

- Grade Control Logic: When driving downhill, the transmission will down-shift to provide increased engine braking. Upshift inhibit on grades: If the accelerator pedal is released when travelling uphill, up-shifts are prevented to reduce busyness on grades

- Gear hold around corners: This feature prevents up-shifts when cornering quickly and provides improved response when exiting the corner.

- Brake support down-shift: When heavy braking is detected, the transmission down-shifts early to provide increased engine braking and be in the right gear for tip-in.

- Gear hold, fast-off throttle: Up-shifts are prevented when the throttle is backed off very quickly.

- Emergency down-shifts: When driving in the “manual” mode, if the accelerator pedal kick-down switch is activated the transmission will down-shift to 3rd gear (or even 2nd) to provide good acceleration when the driver forgets they are in “manual” mode, which is useful if overtaking.

Award-winning SUV
More than 155,000 Territory SUVs have been sold since the nameplate launched in 2004 and this SUV remains a favourite with Australian families.

The series walk is:

TX –3 models available: RWD petrol, RWD diesel, AWD diesel
TS –3 models available: RWD petrol, RWD diesel, AWD diesel
Titanium –3 models available: RWD petrol, RWD diesel, AWD diesel
