Ford Continues to Expand EcoBoost Engine Family

Ford Australia’s EcoBoost engine family continues to grow, with the unveiling of several new fuel-efficient power-trains at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

Ford Australia is showcasing EcoBoost technology in its newest addition to the line-up, the Focus ST performance hatch. However, the all-new Ford Kuga and EcoSport being previewed at AIMS will also be available with EcoBoost engines.

As the newest compact SUV to join the Ford family next year, the Ford Kuga will be available with an EcoBoost petrol engine as well as TDCi turbo diesel.

EcoBoost engine technology is Ford’s global response to customer needs for more fuel efficient and greener vehicles.

Already available in the Mondeo and Falcon, Ford Australia plans to add a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine to its Fiesta line-up in 2013 and the EcoSport SUV when it arrives in early 2014.

“Fundamental to Ford’s future is a comprehensive strategy to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions through the migration of advanced technologies like EcoBoost that are affordable and accessible to all our customers,” Ford Australia President and CEO, Bob Graziano, said.

“Our EcoBoost technology is a critical part of that story.”

Using the latest power-train technologies such as EcoBoost with twin independent camshaft variable timing (Ti-VCT), Ford has given its newest SUV a range of engines that are capable of high power and high torque while consuming less fuel.

The global EcoBoost technology – which is already available in Australia in the Focus ST, Mondeo and Falcon – also features turbo-charging and direct injection so that the EcoBoost engines can rival the power and performance of a larger engine – but at a fraction of the fuel consumption.

The Ford Australia EcoBoost line-up currently includes:

Focus ST

184 kW @ 5500 rpm
340 Nm @ 2000 – 4500 rpm
7.4 litres / 100km

Mondeo hatch - Zetec, Titanium

149 kW @ 6000 rpm
300 Nm @ 1750 – 4500 rpm
8.0 litres / 100km

Falcon XT, G6 and G6E

179 kW @ 5500 rpm
353 Nm @ 2000 rpm
8.1 litres / 100km*

These engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement power-trains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance for millions of drivers around the world.

Ford holds more than 125 patents on EcoBoost engine technology. By 2013, Ford expects annual global production of EcoBoost-equipped vehicles to reach nearly 1.6 million units – almost 100,000 above the company’s prior target. Also, by 2013, almost 80 per cent of Ford’s global nameplates will be available with EcoBoost.

Ford Australia has secured two Ford Kugas for the duration of the show. Showgoers and Ford customers will be able to check out the Ford Kugas as part of its ‘Smart Drive” outdoor experience. Among some of the advances in the latest Ford Kuga are Ford’s advanced voice control, multi-media integration and connectivity interface via SYNC.

Ford’s EcoBoost engine family has been widely applauded for its Smart technology, fuel efficiency and green credentials. It has become widely known as the ‘replacement for displacement’.

In June the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine won the acclaimed 2012 “International Engine of the Year” award. The engine also took out “Best New Engine” and “Best Engine Under 1.0” in the awards presented by the Engine Technology International magazine.
