Segment Analysis Q1 2018

2018 Quarter 1
Because the segmentation we use in our monthly stats is slightly different from the standard VFACTs ones, the charts below look at each individual segment based on our criteria - except where otherwise noted.

Please also note that comparisons are made against the previous quarter as they normally are.

Micro Segment


The Kia Picanto retained the lead of this segment in Q1with an improved 60.9% share ahead of the Holden Barina Spark up a place to 2<sup>nd</sup> and the Mitsubishi Mirage down a place in 3<sup>rd</sup>.


The top five contenders in this segment accounted for a 99.9% of the sales although there are only six contenders now anyway.


Apart from the new entrant, only the Barina Spark (+35) gained any ground while the Mitsubishi Mirage (-325) and Suzuki Celerio (-68) were the largest losers.


Overall, the segment dropped 17 units compared to the same quarter last year.

As for each series, the first two charts look at the raw numbers and the market share percentage while the third compares market share percentage in 2018 with that of 2017 for the same period. The Ford entrant uses a blue coloured bar and the Holden entrant a red one.








Light Segment


The Hyundai Accent retained the segment lead with a higher 21.1% share of the segment ahead of the Mazda 2 with the Toyota Yaris in 3<sup>rd</sup>, the Honda Jazz in 4<sup>th</sup> and the Suzuki Swift (+2) in 5<sup>th</sup>.


The Ford Fiesta dropped one place to 12<sup>th</sup> and is four spots behind the Holden Barina. The top five contenders in this segment accounted for a bigger 67.4% of the sales but it is still a wide open segment with twenty-one current contenders in total.


There were some big winners (and losers) compared with last year – the Mazda 2 (-141), VW Polo (-147) and Toyota Yaris (-495) worst, while the Honda Jazz (+443), Kia Rio (+367) and Suzuki Swift (+1,012) made good gains.


The segment (as we view it), dropped 185 sales or 0.9%.

In market share terms (and only counting contenders that aren’t new models), the Kia Rio (+1.50) and Hyundai Accent (+2.23) and Suzuki Swift (+4.62) picked up substantial share while the Toyota Yaris dropped 2.9.


Small Segment


The Toyota Corolla retained the top spot with a higher 17.09% share with the Mazda 3 in 2<sup>nd</sup> and the Hyundai i30 in 3<sup>rd</sup>, VW Golf up one to 4<sup>th</sup>; Kia Cerato down one to 5<sup>th</sup> and the Ford Focus down one in 11<sup>th</sup>. The top five contenders in this segment accounted for a larger 63.45% of the sales, leaving the balance to the thirty+ other active contenders in this segment.


It was another segment of mixed results - the Toyota Corolla (-645) and Mazda 3 (-739) among the bigger losers while the VW Golf (+822), Holden Astra (+1,192) and Honda Civic (+1,676) are the best of the winners excluding new entrants.

In market share terms, the Honda Civic (+3.02) is the big winner while the Mazda 3 (-1.63) is the biggest loser.


Medium Segment



The Toyota Camry continued another long-standing domination of the segment but with a much smaller 29.35% of the sales in this segment. It outsold the runner up Mercedes C-Class by 2.22:1 with the Mercedes CLA-Class (+1) in 3<sup>rd</sup>, the Mazda 6 (-1) in 4<sup>th</sup> and the BMW 3-Series (+1) in 5<sup>th</sup>. The rest of the Top 10 are the Ford Mondeo (-1) in 6<sup>th</sup>, Subaru Liberty (+2) in 7<sup>th</sup>, VW Passat (-1) in 8<sup>th</sup>, Skoda Octavia (+1) in 9<sup>th</sup> and the Audi A4 (-2) in 10<sup>th</sup>.

The top five contenders in this segment accounted for a smaller 63.23% of the sales, leaving the balance to the twenty-six other contenders.

It was mostly negative results for the entrants in this segment with the Audi A5 Sportback (+115) the only real winner while the Toyota Camry (-838), Mercedes C-Class (-549) and Ford Mondeo (-303) faring worst amongst the established contenders.

In market share terms, the big losers were the Mercedes Benz C-Class (-1.37) and Ford Mondeo (-1.26) while the Audi A5 Sportback (+1.22) and Mercedes CLA-Class (+1.76) gained the most.


Large Segment



The Holden Commodore continued to lead this segment but lost significant share to now represent 60.63% of the segment. This is an even more closed segment with the top three contenders accounting for 80.86% of the sales, leaving the scraps to the twelve other contenders. The (new) Kia Stinger gained four places to take 2<sup>nd</sup> place while the Mercedes Benz E-Class remained in 3<sup>rd</sup> place.

The rest of the Top 10 saw the BMW 5 Series steady in 4<sup>th</sup> ahead of the Skoda Superb in 5<sup>th</sup> place, Toyota Aurion down four places in 6<sup>th</sup>; the Maserati Ghibli up two in 7<sup>th</sup>, the Audi A6 down one in 8<sup>th</sup>, the Volvo S90 up six places to 9<sup>th</sup> and the Audi A7 up five places in 10<sup>th</sup>.

In market share terms, the Skoda Superb (+1.68) and Mercedes-Benz E-Class (+1.67) are the big winners not counting the new entrants while the losers were led by the Toyota Aurion(-4.68) and Holden Commodore (-10.72).


Upper Large Segment



The Chrysler 300 (with a much smaller 21.87% of the segment sales) gained a place to take the segment lead ahead of the Mercedes S-Class (+2), BMW 7 Series (-1) in 3rd, Porsche Panamera (=1) in 4<sup>th</sup> and the BMW 6 Series GT (+1) in 5<sup>th</sup> place - the five of them accounting for a much smaller 78.13% of the sales in this segment. The former segment leading Holden Caprice dropped to 6<sup>th</sup> place.


It was mostly red numbers for this segment with the Holden Caprice (-128) leading the way while only the Mercedes S-Class (+38) gained anything significant.







In market share terms, the only substantial loser is the Caprice (-34.8) while the Porsche Panamera (+5.75), BMW 6 Series (+7.73) and Mercedes S-Class (+9.96) were all significant winners.


People Mover Segment



The Kia Carnival retained the lead with a considerably higher share of 46.71% ahead of the Honda Odyssey; VW Multivan, LDV G10 (+2) and the Toyota Tarago. The top five accounted for a bigger 84.38% of the sales, leaving the crumbs for the remaining twelve entrants.


Most of the contenders gained some sales compared to 2016 with the Kia Carnival (+294) doing best and the Hyundai iMax (-176) the only significant loser.

In market share terms, the only substantial winner is the Kia Carnival (+9.12) while significant losers included the Hyundai iMax (-5.58) and Toyota Tarago (-1.85).

Sport < $80k Segment



This is the same category used by VFACTs (as are the other two Sport segments).


In a highly volatile and fashion driven segment, the Ford Mustang retainedthe lead (with a lower 47.29% share) ahead of the BMW 2 Series (+1) in 2<sup>nd</sup> with the Hyundai Veloster (-1) in 3<sup>rd</sup>, Mazda MX-5 (+1) in 4<sup>th</sup> and the Toyota 86 (-1) in 5<sup>th</sup>. That group cornered a smaller 84.9% of the sales with ten others left fighting for a share of the segment as well.


It was not many winners and plenty of losers this quarter; the latter including the Toyota 86 (-250), Hyundai Veloster (-245) and Ford Mustang (-145) while the former really only had the Subaru BRZ (+71).







In market share terms, the only big winner of the established contenders is the Ford Mustang (+7.62) while the Toyota 86 (-3.72) and Hyundai Veloster (-3.41) were the biggest losers.


Sport > $80k < $200k Segment



The Mercedes C-Class Coupe retained the segment lead with a greatly reduced 32.24% share of the segment ahead of the BMW 4-Series in 2<sup>nd</sup> with the Audi A5 (+1) in 3<sup>rd</sup>, Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe (-1) in 4<sup>th</sup> and Lexus RC steady in 5<sup>th</sup> with the top five accounting for a lower 79.92% of the segment. Most existing contenders lost volume compared to last year led by the Mercedes C-Class Coupe (-440) and BMW 4-Series Coupe (-111).







In market share terms, there were no significant winner amongst existing contenders while the only significant loser is the Mercedes C-Class Coupe (-14.77).


Sport > $200k Segment



In the serious money end of the market, the Porsche 911 (with a considerably larger 35.98% share of the segment) retained the segment lead ahead of Ferrari, Mercedes AMG GT, Lamborghini Convertible / Coupe (+1) and the Aston Martin Convertible / Coupe (-1) rounding out the top five which between them held a greater 73.56% of the segment leaving eleven others to fight over the crumbs.

Nearly all of the segment contenders gained small amounts of volume while the only loss of any significance was the BMW 6-Series which dropped 18 sales which is actually half of their volume!







In market share terms, the only real losers was the BMW 6-Series (-3.75) while the Maserati (+3.76) and Mercedes AMG GT (+2.63) led the winners.

SUV Compact



Another hotly contested segment – the Mazda CX-3 (+1) regained the segment lead with a much lower 15.03% share ahead of the Mitsubishi ASX (-1), Subaru XV (+2), Nissan Qashqai (-1) and Honda HR-V (-1),. The top five contenders took a considerably smaller 62.8% of the share, leaving the balance to the twenty others including the Ford EcoSport which dropped two spots into 13<sup>th</sup> place.


Once again, it was a mixed bag of results with the Mitsubishi ASX (+512) and Subaru XV (+1,693) leading the way amongst the established contenders although the four new entrants all gained significant volume while the Nissan Juke (-293) and Holden Trax (-717) were the biggest losers.








In market share terms, it was mostly losers, led by the Mazda CX-3 (-4.54) and Nissan Qashquai (-2.33) amongst the established contenders.


SUV Small



The segment lead was retained by Mazda CX-5 (with a smaller 14.94% share) ahead of the Nissan X-Trail (+2), Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tuscon (-1) and Honda CR-V (+1) which between them captured a smaller 61.4% of the segment. The Ford Kuga / Escape remained in 10<sup>th</sup> place.


It was a fairly even split between winners and losers with the Jeep Cherokee (-178), Subaru Forester (-490) and Hyundai Tuscon (-805) doing worst while the Mitsubishi Outlander (+847) and Honda CR-V (+2,939) performed best.









In percentage share terms, the Subaru Forester (-2.27) and Hyundai Tuscon (-3.83) led the negative way while the Honda CR-V (+6.06) led the other end of that table.

SUV Medium



The Toyota Prado retained the top spot and a larger 14.94% share from the Toyota Kluger with the Subaru Outback (-1) in in 3<sup>rd </sup>and the minor places filled by the Mazda CX-9 (+1) and the Isuzu Mu-X (+1) with the top five contenders taking a higher 52.55% of the segment leaving the balance to the seventeen other contenders, including Ford Everest (+5) in 10<sup>th</sup>.


It was another mixed bag of results with the hardest hit being the Holden Captiva (-1,255), Nissan Pathfinder (-605)andHyundai Santa Fe (-565) while the Toyota Kluger (+1,016), Ford Everest (+512) and Isuzu Mu-X (+439) fared best.








In market share terms, the only real winners was the Toyota Kluger (+4.08) while the big loser was the Holden Captiva (-3.98).


SUV Large


The Toyota Landcruiser continued a long-held domination of the segment – but with a smaller 89.71 of the sales although there is now only one other contender in the segment anyway so the rest was theirs.







SUV Luxury



A surprisingly crowded segment and becoming a volatile one, the segment lead was taken by the BMW X3 (+1) ahead of the Mercedes Benz GLC-Class (+1), Audi Q5 (+4), Mercedes Benz GLA-Class (+4) and Lexus NX (+1). This is a reasonably open segment with the top five taking just 35.35% of the sales.


The rest of the Top 10 are BMW X1 (-2), Land Rover Discovery Sport (-6), Porsche Macan (+6), BMW X5 (-4) and Range Rover Sport (-1).


It was another mixed bag segment with some solid winners – Audi Q5 (+515) and BMW X3 (+639) but also some reasonably big losers led by the Land Rover Evoque (-656), Land Rover Discovery Sport (-602) and Audi Q3 (-506).

As the vehicles classified in this segment come from all the other SUV segments (separated by price) - we have colour coded them so that it can be seen which segment they belong to. Upper Large, Large, Medium and Small with more than half the Top 10 coming out of the Medium segment in a turnaround from last quarter where half came from the Large one.







Vans

The Toyota Hiace retained the segment lead (and a smaller 29.0% share of the segment) from the Hyundai iLoad with the Renault Traffic (+1) in 3<sup>rd</sup>, VW Caddy (+1) in 4<sup>th</sup> and the VW Transporter (-2) in 5<sup>th</sup>. Between them, the top five contenders held a smaller 75.06% of the sales with the balance left to the remaining nine contenders including the Ford Transit in 6<sup>th</sup> place.

Most of the contenders gained volume with the LDV G10 (+120), Renault Traffic (+118) and Ford Transit (+99) doing best with the Toyota Hiace (-155) and Hyundai iLoad (-499) doing worst.







Ute - 4x2

The Toyota Hilux continued to lead the segment taking a little over one in every three sales, ahead of the Ford Ranger 4x2, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu Ute D-Max and Nissan Navara (+1). Between them, the top five contenders hold a much higher 82.97% of the sales with the balance left to the remaining seven contenders.

Most of the segment gained small amounts of volume with only the Holden Ute (-623) and Holden Colorado 4x2 (-107) losing significant volume while the Toyota Hilux 4x2 (+399) and Isuzu Ute D-Max 4x2 (+453) made solid gains.







In market share terms only the Toyota Hilux 4x2 (+3.75) and Isuzu Ute D-Max 4x2 (+4.62) made significant gains while the Holden Ute (-6.62) fared worst.

Ute - 4x4

The Ford Ranger 4x4 retained the segment lead from the Toyota Hilux 4x4 with a 96 unit difference. The remaining spots were held by the Mitsubishi Triton 4x4, Nissan Navara 4x4 (+1) and the Holden Colorado 4x4 (-1). The Ranger held an improved 22.72% of the segment with the top five accounting for a higher 77.0% of the segment.

The Nissan Navara 4x4 (+901), Ford Ranger (+1,435) and Toyota Hilux 4x4 (+1,902) were the big winners in the segment while the Holden Colorado 4x4 (-643) was the only significant loss.







Manufacturer



The two sets of charts below look at the same results from a manufacturer point of view, divided into the Top 15 and next 20 for clarity. Some change at the top of the order with Toyota leading from Mazda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi (+2), and Ford (-1) in 5<sup>th</sup>.


About a third of the top fifteen are down in volume - Holden (-4,595) and Mazda (-713) amongst the worst. Kia (+1,406), Mitsubshi (+2,799), Toyota (+3,753) and Honda (+5,357) lead the winners.







In market share terms Holden (-1.79) lost more than one full percentage point while Honda (+1.62) gained more than one.

Amongst the next 20, Suzuki leads the group ahead of Land Rover, Lexus, Renault, Jeep 5<sup>th</sup>, Porsche (+2) 6<sup>th</sup>, Volvo 7<sup>th</sup>, LDV (+3) 8<sup>th</sup>, Skoda (-3) in 9<sup>th</sup> and Mini (-1) in 10<sup>th</sup>.

LDV (+797) is the biggest winner while the only significant losers in this group are Jaguar (-303) and Land Rover (-932).







We don’t graph them but in the remaining fifteen manufacturers (which represent those under ~100 sales) it is Chrysler (+2), Ferrari (+4), RAM (-2), Lamborghini (+3) and Aston Martin (+1) at the top ahead of Bentley, McLaren (+1), Lotus (+1) and Rolls Royce (+1) that make the first ten .
