Segment Analysis Q3 2018

2018 Quarter 3
Because the segmentation we use in our monthly stats is slightly different from the standard VFACTs ones, the charts below look at each individual segment based on our criteria - except where otherwise noted.

Please also note that comparisons are made against the previous quarter as they normally are.

Micro Segment


The Kia Picanto retained the lead of this segment in Q3 with a fractionally improved 66.7% share ahead of the Mitsubishi Mirage (+1) in 2<sup>nd</sup> and the Holden Barina Spark (-1) in 3<sup>rd</sup>.The top five contenders in this segment accounted for all but one of the sales as there are only six contenders anyway.

Apart from the new entrant, nothing really gained any ground while the Mitsubishi Mirage (-321) and Barina Spark (-225) were the largest losers.

Overall, the segment increased by 986 units compared to the same quarter last year, an improvement of 18.7% with all of that (and more) being taken up by the Kia Picanto.

Note: For our purposes, we combine two VFACTs classifications which are divided by price and not size.

As for each series, the first two charts look at the raw numbers and the market share percentage while the third compares market share percentage in 2018 with that of 2017 for the same period. The Ford entrant uses a blue coloured bar and the Holden entrant a red one.








Light Segment


The Hyundai Accent retained the segment lead with a slightly larger 20.6% share of the segment ahead of the Mazda 2 with the Toyota Yaris in 3<sup>rd</sup>, the Suzuki Swift in 4<sup>th</sup> and the Honda Jazz in 5<sup>th</sup>. Kia Rio 6<sup>th</sup>, VW Polo 7<sup>th</sup>, Holden Barina 8<sup>th</sup>, Mini Hatch / Clubman 9<sup>th</sup> while the Suzuki Baleno rounded out the Top Ten, all positions unchanged.

The Ford Fiesta dropped one place to 15<sup>th</sup> and is now seven spots behind the Holden Barina. The top five contenders in this segment accounted for a smaller 64.8% of the sales but it is still a wide open segment with twenty-one current contenders in total.

There were some big winners (and losers) compared with this quarter last year – the Toyota Yaris (-1,334), Hyundai Accent (-1,330), VW Polo (-1,250) and Mazda 2 (-1,227) worst, while the MG3 (+220) and Suzuki Swift (+1,752) made good gains.

The segment (as we view it), dropped 4,037 sales or 6.3%.

In market share terms (and only counting contenders that aren’t new models), the Suzuki Swift (+3.62) picked up substantial share while the VW Polo dropped 1.43 and the Toyota Yaris dropped 1.04.


Small Segment


The Toyota Corolla retained the top spot with a bigger 17.82% share with the Mazda 3 in 2<sup>nd</sup> and the Hyundai i30 in 3<sup>rd</sup>, VW Golf in 4<sup>th</sup>; Kia Cerato in 5<sup>th</sup>, Honda Civic in 6<sup>th</sup>, Subaru Impreza in 7<sup>th</sup>, Holden Astra in 8<sup>th</sup>, Mitsubishi Lancer in 9<sup>th</sup> and the Ford Focus in 10<sup>th</sup>, all unchanged. The top five contenders in this segment accounted for a larger 66.8% of the sales, leaving the balance to the thirty+ other active contenders in this segment.

It was another segment of mixed results - the Toyota Corolla (-978), Mazda 3 (-1,113), Hyundai Elantra (-1,366), and Subaru Impreza (-1,667) among the bigger losers while the Hyundai i30 (+886) and VW Golf (+1,940) are the best of the winners, excluding new entrants.

In market share terms, the Hyundai i30 (+1.28) and VW Golf (+1.69) are the big winners while nothing lost more than a full percentage point.

The segment (as we view it), dropped 8,570 sales or 5.2%.

Medium Segment


The Toyota Camry continued another long-standing domination of the segment but with an improved 31.85% of the sales in this segment. It outsold the runner up Mercedes C-Class by 2.8:1 with the Mercedes CLA-Class in 3<sup>rd</sup>, the BMW 3-Series (+1) in 4<sup>th</sup> and the Mazda 6 (-1) in 5<sup>th</sup>. The rest of the Top 10 are the Ford Mondeo in 6<sup>th</sup>, Skoda Octavia in 7<sup>th</sup>, VW Passat in 8<sup>th</sup>, Subaru Liberty in 9<sup>th</sup> and the Audi A4 in 10<sup>th</sup>, all unchanged.


The top five contenders in this segment accounted for a bigger 64.11% of the sales, leaving the balance to the twenty-six other contenders.


It was mostly negative results for the entrants in this segment with the BMW 3-Series (+396) and Skoda Octavia (+184) the only real winners while the Toyota Camry (-6,879), Mercedes C-Class (-2,474) and Ford Mondeo (-841) fared worst amongst the established contenders.

In market share terms, the big loser was the Toyota Camry (-5.79) while the Skoda Octavia (+1.45), Mercedes CLA-Class (+1.92) and BMW 3-Series (+2.61) gained the most.

The segment (as we view it), dropped 12,696 sales or 25.9% which is now as bad as the segment we report in our monthly figures because the ‘prestige’ entrants haven’t fared well either.

Large Segment


The Holden Commodore continued to lead this segment and gained a lost a small amount of market share to now represent 59.46% of the segment. This is an even more closed segment with the top five contenders accounting for a slightly lower 92.01% of the sales, leaving the scraps to the ten other contenders. The Kia Stinger remained in 2<sup>nd</sup> place while the Mercedes Benz E-Class remained in 3<sup>rd</sup> place.

The rest of the Top 10 saw the Skoda Superb in 4<sup>th</sup> ahead of the BMW 5 Series in 5<sup>th</sup> place, Audi A6 in 6<sup>th</sup>; the Jaguar XF up three places in 7<sup>th</sup>, Maserati Ghibli in 8<sup>th</sup>, the Toyota Aurion down two places to 9<sup>th</sup> and the Volvo S90 up one place in 10<sup>th</sup>.


It was mostly negative results for the entrants in this segment with the Holden Commodore (-9,899) and BMW 5-Series(-448) faring worst amongst the established contenders and only the new entrants making any real gains.

In market share terms, the Skoda Superb (+2.32) and Mercedes-Benz E-Class (+3.39) are the big winners not counting the new entrants while the losers were led by the Holden Commodore (-11.17).

The segment (as we view it), dropped 12,076 sales or 49.6%.

Upper Large Segment


The Mercedes S-Class (with an improved 24.47% of the segment sales) retained the segment lead ahead of the Chrysler 300, BMW 7 Series in 3rd, Porsche Panamera in 4<sup>th</sup> and the BMW 6 Series GT in 5<sup>th</sup> place - the five of them accounting for a slightly bigger 78.31% of the sales in this segment.

It was mostly red numbers for this segment with the BMW 7-Series (-36) leading the way while only the Mercedes S-Class (+120) gained anything significant.







In market share terms, there are no substantial losses while the Chrysler 300 (+4.52) and Mercedes S-Class (+15.72) were the significant winners.

The segment (as we view it), dropped 244 sales or 21.3%.

People Mover Segment


The Kia Carnival retained the lead with a bigger share of 49.52% ahead of the Honda Odyssey; VW Multivan, LDV G10 and the Toyota Tarago (+1). The top five accounted for a larger 84.42% of the sales, leaving the crumbs for the remaining twelve entrants.
Most of the contenders gained some sales compared to 2016 with the Kia Carnival (+506) doing best and the Hyundai iMax (-347) and Honda Odyssey (-216) the biggest losers.

In market share terms, the only substantial winner is the Kia Carnival (+6.35) while significant losers included the Hyundai iMax (-3.23), Honda Odyssey (-1.67) and Toyota Tarago (-1.26).

The segment (as we view it), dropped 298 sales or 2.9%.

Sport < $80k Segment


This is the same category used by VFACTs (as are the other two Sport segments).

In a highly volatile and fashion driven segment, the Ford Mustang retainedthe lead (with a bigger 51.86% share) ahead of the BMW 2 Series in 2<sup>nd</sup> with the Toyota 86 3<sup>rd</sup>, Mazda MX-5 in 4<sup>th</sup> and the Subaru BRZ in 5<sup>th</sup>. That group cornered a larger 85.78% of the sales with ten others left fighting for a share of the segment as well.

It was only one winner and plenty of losers in this segment; the latter including the Mazda MX5 (-532), Toyota 86 (-560), Hyundai Veloster (-1,109) and Ford Mustang (-2,750) while the former only had the Subaru BRZ (+2).







In market share terms, the only big winners of the established contenders are the Subaru BRZ (+2.57), BMW 2-Series(+2.33) and Ford Mustang (+2.22) while the Hyundai Veloster (-5.56) was the biggest loser.

The segment (as we view it), dropped 2,274 sales or 15.31%.

Sport > $80k < $200k Segment


The Mercedes C-Class Coupe retained the segment lead with a smaller 32.65% share of the segment ahead of the BMW 4-Series in 2<sup>nd</sup>, the Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe (+1) in 3<sup>rd</sup>, Audi A5 (-1) in 4<sup>th</sup> and Lexus RC steady in 5<sup>th</sup> with the top five accounting for a lower 78.09% of the segment. Most existing contenders lost volume compared to last year led by the Mercedes C-Class Coupe (-985) and BMW 4-Series Coupe (-316) with the Audi A5 (+91) and Porsche Cayman (+38) the only real winners.







In market share terms, the Audi A5 (+4.69) and Mercedes E-Class (+3.98) were the significant winners amongst existing contenders while the only significant losers were the BMW 4-Series (-2.19) and Mercedes C-Class Coupe (-9.43).

The segment (as we view it), dropped 1,429 sales or 26.0%.

Sport > $200k Segment


In the serious money end of the market, the Porsche 911 (with a smaller 32.3% share of the segment) retained the segment lead ahead of Ferrari, Mercedes AMG GT, Lamborghini Convertible / Coupe and the Aston Martin Convertible / Coupe rounding out the (unchanged) top five which between them held a smaller 71.71% of the segment leaving eleven others to fight over the crumbs.

Nearly all of the segment contenders gained small amounts of volume with the 911 leading the pack gaining 59 sales, while the only losses of any significance were the BMW 6-Series which dropped 54 sales and the Mercedes SL Class which dropped 29 sales.







In market share terms, the only real loser is the BMW 6-Series (-4.05) while the Mercedes AMG GT (+3.21) and Porsche 911 (+4.59) led the winners.

The segment (as we view it), dropped all of 6 sales or 0.45%.

SUV Compact


Another hotly contested segment – the Mitsubishi ASX retained the segment lead with a slightly better 15.61% share ahead of the Mazda CX-3, Nissan Qashqai (=1), Subaru XV (-1) and Honda HR-V. The top five contenders took a smaller 61.41% of the share, leaving the balance to the twenty others including the Ford EcoSport which remained in 14<sup>th</sup> place. The balance of the Top Ten is made up of the new Hyundai Kona, Toyota C-HR, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Holden Trax and Suzuki Vitara, all unchanged.

Once again, it was a mixed bag of results with the Mitsubishi ASX (+949) and Subaru XV (+3,731) leading the way amongst the established contenders although the four new entrants all gained significant volume while the Suzuki Vitara (-758), Mazda CX-3 (-1,044) and Holden Trax (-1,193) were the biggest losers. While on the topic of the new contenders, the Hyundai Kona has picked up 9,263 sales, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 5,409 and the Toyota CH-R has taken 2,950.







In market share terms, it was mostly losers, led by the Mazda CX-3 (-4.72) and Holden Trax (-2.76) with only the Subaru XV (+2.17) gaining ground amongst the established contenders.

The segment (as we view it), gained 18,825 sales or 24.91% to be the most improved segment again.

SUV Small


The segment lead was retained by Mazda CX-5 (with a bigger 15.25% share) ahead of the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail, Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V which between them captured a bigger 61.07% of the segment. The balance of the Top Ten being the Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester (+1), VW Tiguan (-1), and the Ford Escape gained a spot to 10<sup>th</sup> place.

It was a fairly even split between winners and losers with the Jeep Cherokee (-417), Ford Escape (-453), Subaru Forester (-2,132) and Hyundai Tucson (-3,798) doing worst while the Mazda CX-5 (+998), Toyota RAV4 (+1,314), Nissan XTrail (+2,254) and Honda CR-V (+6,429) performed best.








In percentage share terms, the Subaru Forester (-2.12) and Hyundai Tucson (-3.87) led the negative way while the Honda CR-V (+4.54) led the other end of that table.

The segment (as we view it), gained 8,586 sales or 6.94% to be the second most improved.

SUV Medium


The Toyota Prado retained the top spot and a larger 16.38% share from the Toyota Kluger with the Subaru Outback in 3<sup>rd </sup>and the minor places filled by the Isuzu Mu-X and Mazda CX-9 with the top five contenders taking a higher 53.72% of the segment leaving the balance to the eighteen other contenders, including Ford Everest (+1) in 8<sup>th</sup>.

It was another mixed bag of results with the hardest hit being the Holden Captiva (-2,233)andHyundai Santa Fe (-3,398) and Hyundai Santa Fe (-998) while the Toyota Kluger (+1,973) and Toyota Prado (+2,168) fared best.







In market share terms, the only real winners are the Toyota Kluger (+2.39) and Toyota Prado (+2.65) while the big loser was the Holden Captiva (-3.81).

The segment (as we view it), dropped 1,008 sales or 1.5% to be the only SUV segment to drop.


SUV Large


The Toyota Landcruiser continued a long-held domination of the segment – but with a bigger 91.13% of the sales although there is now only one other contender in the segment anyway so the rest was theirs.








The segment (as we view it), gained 1,105 sales or 10.74%.

SUV Luxury


A surprisingly crowded segment and becoming a volatile one, the segment lead was retained by the Mercedes Benz GLC-Class ahead of the BMW X3, Mercedes Benz GLA-Class, Lexus NX (+1) and Audi Q5 (-1). This is a reasonably open segment with the top five taking just 34.6% of the sales.

The rest of the Top 10 are BMW X1, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Mercedes Benz GLE Class, BMW X5 and Volvo XC60 (+ 1).
It was another mixed bag segment with some solid winners – Audi Q5 (+863), BMW X3 (+1,370) and Mercedes Benz GLC Class (+1,618) but also some reasonably big losers led by the Land Rover Evoque (-1,170), Land Rover Discovery Sport (-1,185) and BMW X5 (-787).

As the vehicles classified in this segment come from all the other SUV segments (separated by price) - we have colour coded them so that it can be seen which segment they belong to. Upper Large, Large, Medium and Small with half the Top 10 coming out of the Medium segment.








The segment (as we view it), gained 2,622 sales or 5.23% all of which came from the Small SUV segment as the other three size segments all lost volume.

Vans
The Toyota Hiace retained the segment lead (and a bigger 28.76% share of the segment) from the Hyundai iLoad with the VW Caddy in 3<sup>rd</sup>, VW Transporter in 4<sup>th</sup> and the Renault Traffic in 5<sup>th</sup>. Between them, the top five contenders held a smaller 73.19% of the sales with the balance left to the remaining nine contenders including the FordTransit in 6<sup>th</sup> place.

Most of the contenders gained volume with the Ford Transit (+376) doing best and the Toyota Hiace (-423) and Hyundai iLoad (-1,295) doing worst.







In market share terms, the only real winner is the Ford Transit (+2.49) while the big loser was the Hyundai iLoad (-5.75).

The segment (as we view it), dropped 1,119 sales or 5.93%.

Ute - 4x2
The Toyota Hilux continued to lead the segment taking more than one in every three sales (35.68%) ahead of the Ford Ranger 4x2, Isuzu Ute D-Max, Mazda BT-50 and Nissan Navara. Between them, the top five contenders hold a higher 83.81% of the sales with the balance left to the remaining seven contenders.

Most of the segment gained small amounts of volume with only the Mazda BT-50 4x2 (-514) and Ford Ranger 4x2 (-564) losing significant volume while the Toyota Hilux 4x2 (+1,130) and Isuzu Ute D-Max 4x2 (+413) made solid gains.







In market share terms only the Toyota Hilux 4x2 (+6.73) and Isuzu Ute D-Max 4x2 (+2.47) made significant gains while nothing dropped a full percentage point.

The segment (as we view it), dropped 2,819 sales or 8.88%.

Ute - 4x4
The Toyota Hilux 4x4retained the segment lead from the FordRanger 4x4with a more substantial 673 unit difference as their battle continues. The remaining spots were held by the Mitsubishi Triton 4x4, Holden Colorado 4x4 and the Nissan Navara 4x4. The Hilux held a bigger 22.02% of the segment with the top five accounting for a smaller 73.3% of the segment.

The Toyota Landcruiser PU/CC (+1,298), Mitsubishi Triton 4x4 (+1,761) and Toyota Hilux 4x4 (+2,403) were the big winners in the segment while the Holden Colorado 4x4 (-990) was the only significant losses.








In market share terms nothing made significant gains while the FordRanger 4x4(-1.50) and Holden Colorado 4x4 (-1.38) lost the most.

The segment (as we view it), gained 7,329 sales or 6.01%.

Manufacturer


The two sets of charts below look at the same results from a manufacturer point of view, divided into the Top 15 and next 20 for clarity. No change at the top of the order with Toyota leading from Mazda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Ford in 5<sup>th</sup> although further down the order VW jumps from 10<sup>th</sup> to 9<sup>th</sup> and Honda drops another place to 10<sup>th</sup>.

Almost half of the top fifteen are down in volume - Holden (-16,898), Ford (-7,441) and Mazda (-3,789) the worst. Toyota (+1,907), Kia (+3,204), Mitsubishi (+5,061) and Honda (+7,096) lead the winners.







In market share terms Holden (-1.74) lost more than one full percentage point while no manufacturer gained more than one.
Amongst the next 20, Suzuki leads the group ahead of Land Rover, Lexus, Renault, Jeep 5<sup>th</sup>, Volvo 6<sup>th</sup>, Skoda (+1) 7<sup>th</sup>, LDV (-1) 8<sup>th</sup>, Porsche in 9<sup>th</sup> and Mini in 10<sup>th</sup>.

LDV (+2,705), MG (+1,506) and Volvo (+1,441) are the biggest winners while the only significant losers in this group are Porsche (-585), Fiat (-632), Suzuki (-853) andf Land Rover (-1,478).








We don’t graph them but in the remaining fifteen manufacturers (which represent those under ~150 sales) it is RAM (+1), Chrysler, Ferrari, Bentley(+1), Aston Martin (-1) and Lamborghini at the top ahead of McLaren, Lotus, Rolls Royce and Morgan that make the first ten .
