Ford Engineers Work Magic on Falcon XR Sprint Series with Tuned Suspension and Pirel

Performance of the XR Sprint Series matched by the braking and grip levels afforded a high-performance sedan

High performance Pirelli P-Zero tyres as well as ride and handling improvements caters to the enthusiast customer

This work builds on Ford’s Australian investment of $2 billion in the past six years, including $300 million in R&D invested in 2015 alone

MELBOURNE, 18 Feb., 2015 – Ford’s Asia-Pacific Product Development team based at Campbellfield in Melbourne has worked its magic on the performance XR6 Sprint and XR8 Sprint series sedans. Apart from significant suspension improvements, the limited-edition cars will be shod with special rubber when they hit the road in May. The Product Development team, working with Pirelli Tyres, has managed to introduce the high performance P-Zero tyre to match the vehicles’ dynamic capability, which not only improves handling but also reduces braking distances.
The Sprint XR6 and Sprint XR8 have undergone significant suspension development to ensure the performance of the vehicles was matched by the braking and grip levels afforded by a high performance sedan expected by an enthusiast customer.

“Customers will certainly notice the difference,” according to Vehicle Line Director of Falcon and Territory, David Wilkinson. “All Fords are renowned for their dynamic DNA – from steering to ride and handling – and with the XR Sprint series our enthusiast customers will experience a number of improvements first-hand.
The ride and steering response has improved and the cars feel more agile and can easily be adjusted mid-corner.”
As well, the new performance Brembo brake package has been confirmed as a premium six piston (front) and four-piston (rear) set-up in a unique gold colour.
Ford’s sports XR Falcon sedan is already acclaimed as one of the finest handling large sedans available but when the opportunity came to develop the XR Sprint series it provided a chance to take the existing car and further improve its dynamic capability.
When the development team started work on the Sprint series, developing a wider rear tyre option was considered essential; and combined with a move to Pirelli P-Zero sports tyres on both XR8 Sprint and XR6 Sprint, the baseline grip available has been substantially improved without compromising ride quality.
Suspension changes were then incorporated to take advantage of these new grip levels.

XR8 Sprint suspension improvements have:
– Improved ride
– Provided sharper handling
– Increased grip levels
– Improved braking performance and cornering stability
– Reduced understeer
– Increased body control
– Improved balance

XR6 Sprint suspension improvements have:
– Provided sportier ride
– Provided sharper handling
– Increased grip levels
– Improved braking performance and cornering stability
– Reduced understeer
– Increased body control
– Improved balance versus XR6 Turbo

The Pirelli tyres are 245/35 R19 Tyres (front) and 265/35 R19 (rear). The XR Sprint series will also come with a full-size alloy spare (245/35 R19).

At the core of the Sprint are two proven engines, Ford’s turbocharged 4.0 in-line six cylinder and acclaimed Supercharged 5.0-litre V8.
The XR8 Sprint will be powered by a bespoke Sprint calibrated version of Ford’s 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 that develops 345 kW @ 5,750 rpm and 575 Nm @ 2,220-6,250 rpm*. The XR6 Sprint is also a performance powerhouse, developing 325 kW @ 6,000 rpm and 576 Nm @ 2,750 rpm*.

*Performance data measured using premium fuel 95-98 RON
