Gunmetal Grey sounds a bit cheesy, you'll also need to clear it, extra work, extra material etc. Matt Black or 2 Pack Black is the go with white.

And I'll give you a quick tip from a pro. Masking engine bay tricky bits. Try using some Alfoil. You just peel some off and wrap what ever you dont want overspray on. When your done just pull it off, comes off way quicker than paper and masking tape.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers

What ya mean cheesy ?
We dont mind extra work is nothing when it comes to our cars, it costs nothing and is fun. I have more paint crap in my shed than I know what to do with so materials are all sweet. The alfoil trick woulda been good for the shockies and wiring loom , we just tucked rags down there. I was too lazy to pull em out, hahaha. Hey at least i pulled the grommet thru the firewall and didnt paint over it . .

Many moons ago I painted my XC Sedan white with GT black outs, looked very sharp, but I chose to paint the engine bay black, it didn’t work and I wished I painted it white instead.
The black made the engine disappear instead of standing out.

many moons ago i did the same thing with a landau and got the same result. I liked the idea of it but didnt like the way it ended up.
I did see a monaro painted in a kindof dark lime green with a black and crome engine and a white and gold pearl engine bay at first it looked weird mind you this was in th late 80's early 90's after a while it grew on me it did stand out sounds out there but did look ok

We thought about black and whte, but to me it screams xb, I am not a "purist" by any stretch of the imagination, my xc engine is black and with a black bay kinda dissapears too but im at peace with that coz its what I wanted. We painted dannis engine ford blue as u can see and with a white bay should look "stock" so to speak. So much in fact that I may even get the engine bay decal set....... My black and white xb phobia prevents me from painting the accessories black so thats why I am tossing up beteen a dark silver or gun metal grey. When I first painted my xc it was black with a gold pearl thru it. The thing turned green in some light ,gold in a different light so I stripped it back again and went jet black. If this weather hangs round all weekend I may grab the dyna blade and hack the rain channels off for something to do.

You going to take the rain channels off it? That is going to be a job and a half buddy.

I think with the weather this weekend, I dont think you will be getting any painting done..

Thanks for the offer. Would love to see how the rain channels are taken off. I imagine it would be a long process. Interested to see how it is done and happy to lend a hand if ya need one. When are you looking at doing them?

We were going to come and see you this weekend but I have to wait till I get over this nasty flu. Don't want to make you guys sick.

Tell her chrome will blow the budget.

[IMG]I dont see no stinkin squirrell. ? . Ok, Time for a update. Nothin much happened due to my dad trying to break the world record for heart attacks ...7 now . Anyway with all that out the way again, I grabbed my spanners and my (broken) camera and headed out to wreck some more stuff. First up was pull the rear suspension.

I even used car stands, no big deal for everyone i know but for me, im steppin up and taking safety seriously..... lol.

Diff and springs yoinked out

We stripped it down. all new rear rubbers + 3 litres of limslip. = $170.00 (thanks to my mate at bursons)

Had to grab the rattlegun out to get the u bolts off. They was hard.

Seems a rear leaf is busted too. time to head for the parts bin out back again.
Goopin it up for the new seal..

Started to clean up the edges in prep for hackin the gutters off, I pivoted, I went ehhhh and found some rusticles under the edge where the quarter glass goes up....

How to hack gutters off. do it like this... Coz it saves the roof poppin open.

Japanese safety boots and safety glasses are the wat to go...

Think we said we replaced the passenger slam panel before echuca earlier on ?. Anyway bit of a bash at the drivers side revealed what we already knew, more rust but only minor so will cut that out today as soon as motivation moves in. (changin a box on a mates eb v8 as well today so feel free to drop in and help. .

AND , painted the engine bay, i know my pics are toast but I will buy a new camera and get some nice pics up asap.

Some other stuff going on as well. spoiler, rear bar removed. door jams about stripped and ready for primer. Other rain channel nearly all done too. ummmm . tops. thats the latest so far

Dont think anyone reads this anyway but a fast update for today. did the gearbox in the eb. yay.

hacked the rust out of the slam panel. looked like this

Maked me a panel.. looked like this..

welded it in, looked like this..

Went for the dog leg next. wasnr bad but dun this to it.....

then did this....

Started to strip the rear quarters as well. the lower quarters are looking very good, very minor rust , even around the wheel arch is ok. We be gassin in this by tuesday arvo i reckon .............. lols. <---- lookit i said lols. thats pretty camp. Stay tuned for the new camera and some pics u can actually see next time all.

Cheers

thanks for the replies dudes. It kinda helps a bit if i know someone gives a rats about it. I know its no rotisserie build but we havin a crack at it home style. I dont have all the skills needed (farmed the crossmember out to a expert) coz i figured wasnt much use it lookin ok if it drove down the street sideways coz I welded the crossmember in backwards and upside down.... Its fun cuttin rust out n seein if ya can actually make something to cover the hole instead of flywire and bog. used to wizz my undies at seein a rusted out bit but now i grab the grinder and close my eyes. :P .... the mig will it. <-------- lookit, ya have a drink and a smoke n come playin on the net...... nother drink time i think. N JACK dude, its ossible that this white ruined my camera, Colleens camera n maybe very well responsible for little hole in the ozone layer this weekend... it really is brighter than the pics, we thinkin maybe get a reflection of the blue off the engine in it, its just that ummmmmm white. Its growin on me, but its gunna blind drivers.

Nice work on the welding mate.

It is all coming along great! Annoyed that my camera decided to play up the day we came over. but you did a great job on the rain channels.

Don't know about the engine bay being bright but those legs sure are!

Looking forward to the next installment Keep them coming! It is great to see someone giving it a go!

Good Evening trendsetters. Well was a slow start today, went to the markets first , needed a sausage dog i did . Ok, First is a pic of the bay wiv me new camera...

Takes more betterer pics then me old one hey ?

Stripped the roof down........ Oh its perfect > yay

Quarter panels were next. Not too bad, little rust around the far back which i show ya in a sec. Wheel arches pretty good , few pin holes which i will take care over the next few days.

A bit of the rust i was talkin about, Cut out , cleaned up inside, some ****** thought fibreglass was a good fix. (it was actually but steel is more gooderer )

and fixed

Was a couple more but here is end result.

Bet yas thought i forgot about the guards hey ? . Well ya hack the bottom off and end up with just the inner.......

then ya weld the rare spares hunk of junk on the bottom and viola.

As for tomorrow between bathurst, we have to finish paint stripping, about half a rear quarter to go and get her into etch so she wont rust up on us over the week...

Cheers All.

Doc n Danni
