US auto May sales appear to stabilise

US auto sales appeared to stabilise in May, easing the path to recovery for a troubled industry wracked by bankruptcy filings at General Motors and Chrysler, industry data showed.

Chrysler said it managed to sell more vehicles to retail customers in May than any other month so far this year, despite its entry into bankruptcy.

That bodes well for General Motors, which managed to increase its market share for the second consecutive month even as its much-anticipated bankruptcy filing dominated headlines.

Ford, the only member of Detroit's big-three automakers not to ask for billions in government aid to survive the downturn, announced plans to increase production after expanding its market share to the highest point in three years.

Total US auto sales were down 33.7 per cent at 925,824 vehicles compared with May 2008, according to Autodata.

But automakers took comfort in the fact that the seasonally adjusted annualised rate of 9.91 million was the industry's best performance this year.

"The big jump in consumer confidence in May translated into a solid gain in retail vehicle sales compared to April," said Don Esmond, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales.

"We're encouraged that consumers are beginning to return to showrooms and that the industry continues to show signs of stabilisation."

Toyota's market share fell to 16.5 per cent in May from 18.4 per cent a year earlier as its sales fell 41 percent to 152,583 vehicles, according to Autodata.

That allowed Ford to overtake the Japanese automaker for the number two spot with 16.8 percent of the US market, even as May sales fell 24 percent to 155,954. Ford's share in May 2008 was 16.8 percent.

Ford attributed its success to the popularity of its new models, which had pushes sales to the highest level since July 2008.

"At Ford, the future is now," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of sales and marketing.

"New products account for 50 percent of our sales, and demand for these products is driving our market share gains.

"Even as the competitive environment intensifies, Ford's relentless pursuit of quality, fuel efficiency, smart technology and appealing designs is winning new customers."

GM managed to boost its share of the US market to 20.5 percent from 19.1 percent in May 2008 even as sales fell 30 percent to 191,875 vehicles.

"This gives us a lot of confidence that some of the negative issues we've had to deal with are behind us and have not affected our sales," said GM sales analyst Mike DiGiovanni.

"As we reinvent the company and move to become a leaner, more profitable, more customer focused company I think these positive sales results for may give us a good foundation to build on."

Chrysler, which won approval from a bankruptcy judge on Monday to sell its best assets to a new company run by Italy's Fiat, also expressed relief.

"We are pleased that consumers responded to Chrysler's reorganisation by purchasing our products, resulting in our best retail sales month of the year," said Jim Press, Chrysler's president and vice chairman.

"The uncertainty that has been surrounding Chrysler for the last few months is coming to an end, and a vibrant, new company is beginning to take shape," Press added.

But while Chrysler may have increased its share of the retail market, it took a massive hit on fleet sales after plants were closed in order to cut costs and reduce its bloated inventory.

Chrysler's total sales fell 47 percent to 79,010 vehicles in May, pushing its market share down to 8.5 percent in May from 9.4 percent in April and 10.6 percent in May 2008, according to Autodata.

Japanese automaker Honda also took a hit in May as a 42 percent drop in sales pushed its market share down to 10.6 percent from 12.0 a year earlier with 98,344 vehicles sold.

Nissan's share grew marginally to 7.3 percent from 7.2 percent a year earlier after sales fell 33 percent to 67,489 vehicles.

Korea's Hyundai continued to post gains as its share rose to 4.0 from 3.3 percent a year earlier even as sales fell 20.4 percent to 36,937.

Australian motor sales fall 15% in May

Sales of new cars and trucks in Australia fell almost 15 per cent in May, compared to the same time last year, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) said 75,441 new vehicles were retailed last month - 14.9 per cent or 13,199 less than in May last year.

The May result left the market down 19.2 per cent on a year-to-date basis.

Toyota continued in the top sales position in May with 15,481 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 9,177 and Ford with 8,440.

The blue team was 737 units behind the red team. It's getting closer.

One thing that it does demonstrate is how insignificant AUS sales are compared to the US ....... 925,824 vehicles compared to 75,441. Makes you wonder why some of the manufacturers bother coming here with their product!

They make good profits per unit in Australia.

Tax rebate props up car sales

The new car market showed first signs of recovery last month, with sales holding up better than in previous months.

Sales were down by 15 per cent in May, compared with a drop of more than 20 per cent in the first four months of the year.

The figures are an encouraging sign that consumer confidence may be rebounding from the global economic crisis.

The improvement was driven mainly by compact four-wheel-drive sales, which were up slightly on last year.

Business sales also showed an improvement and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has credited the Government's tax rebate on business vehicles for the change.

"There has been a perceivable lift in business sales of new motor vehicles, which is clear evidence that the Government's business tax break is proving to be an effective stimulus measure,'' the chief executive of the FCAI, Andrew McKellar said.

The Government is giving big businesses a 30 per cent rebate on new car purchases, while small businesses can claim a 50 per cent rebate.

Mr McKellar said a number of car companies were promoting the tax break in their advertising and most were reporting strong forward bookings coming into June, which is traditionally the strongest sales month of the year.

"I think there are certainly positive indications in the latest car sales figures. It's the strongest sales month we've had this year. All the signs suggest the market is picking up,'' he said.

Business sales of four-wheel-drives were up by 2 per cent, while sales of commercial vehicles (utes and vans) were down only slightly on last May.

Value Korean brands Hyundai and Kia both sold more cars this May than they did last May, despite the fact that there was one less selling day.

Hyundai sales were up a stunning 32 per cent, while Kia recorded a modest lift.

The luxury end of the market also showed encouraging signs, with Audi up 14 per cent and Mercedes-Benz up 7 per cent.

Local car makers had mixed fortunes, with the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon both outperforming the overall market, while the four-cylinder Camry recorded a hefty 30 per cent drop in sales and the Ford Territory 4WD down 23 per cent.

This always seems to happen after the initial price of oil drops and settles down from a severe price spike. I wonder how many people traded their beloved 4wd and V8's in on a new Corolla only to find it is not what they really want now.

For May, the top ten car companies in order were: Toyota (15,481), Holden (9177), Ford (8440), Mazda (6052), Hyundai (5178), Nissan (4582), Mitsubishi (3921), Honda (3189), Subaru (2965) and Volkswagen (2612). Of those, only Hyundai has sold more vehicles for the year to date than for the same period in 2008.

A bright spot for Holden was its light-truck performance, with the Holden Ute taking full advantage of the government tax incentives to record a 9.8 per cent sales volume increase, to 1221 units.

The Holden Ute outshone the Ford’s Falcon Ute in volume, but the Ford’s 1050 sales represented a bigger increase, up 14.8 per cent on May last year.

Thats a car that people want...a mate of mine wanted one, couldnt get one so bought a new hilux 4x4 single cab tray....

It looks like Ford are starting to turn things around. Any positive at the moment will surely translate to a bigger positive in the future when the market settles.

As others have pointed out, 737 sales between GMHolden and Ford. Interestingly, its 837 sales between C'dore and Falcon.

All we need is for Falcon to steal another 400 sales from say 100 from Corolla and we'll have a real battle on our hands!

PS If you are wondering why Corolla, well lots of them are fleet and Ford targeted them in advertising this month with the LPG Falcon advert!

Talk about the a segment getting bashed around :( With Accord V6 copping the biggest hit.

Total -20.4%, which means at least Falcon (and C'dore) bettered the segment and overall market.

Luckily the Aussie Utes had solid months!

NB I realise the Accord Euro & Camry are both 4 bangers and aren't officially in the segment, but they do compete IMO.

Why would he buy a 4x4 if he wanted an RTV which is 4x2, what's wrong with Ranger 4x2 high rider model or even a Ranger 4x4, it's a much better vehicle than Hilux, especially the interior.
