i thought the bulge was part of the look of the car and didnt serve any purpose for the hieght issue

Frd906, you ever actually seen a quad cam V8 boss engine? It's physically massive. That bulge isn't just there to look good! Which it does...

I hope not. But who is to say what will happen. Have not heard or seen anything for what the next model after FG will look like. I will presume that the FG would keep it when the new 8's arrive.

The bulge is now part of the modern Ford XR / (FPV) GT heritage. I doubt they'd drop it. If they do (post FG), it will be purely to save money I'd imagine.

It is what makes the 8's unique and the dumber blokes know its not an XR6 when there's a buldge stretched into the metal.
My ED's a 6 but for 100 bucks off ebay you can buy a buldge! so i'm getting one and grafted it on. Mmmm.

To the best of my knowledge the bulge was not required for FG but Ford still placed one on there anyway. It's a nice little gimmick that Ford have over the competition.

It's spelt B U L G E.

I thought post BF the bulge wasnt neccesary as the BOSS sits lower in the bay, and it was kept because the bulge is so popular.

Smaller V8 or not its pretty much a given that the bulge will stay for the life of any FG based Falcons.

A similar thread has been done before, I believe everyone came to the consensus that the bulge is here to stay. Nice use of comas also.

I remember back in the day I saw a photo of a BA XR8 with a regular XT bonnet; there were creases in the metal bonnet where they tried to close it over the boss.

yeah i always thought the bulge was invented as a result of a up by the guys at ford, when they put in the v8 in the ba....a pretty nice lookin mistake, if you ask me

Personally, I'd like to see the bulge remain on the GT, but be deleted from the GS/XR8. In the same way it was with the shaker.

Personally I would mind seeing some new styling. Look at the GT's of old. XW, XY, XA, XB all had different bonnet treatment.

I agree, It would be good to see a new GT with a XA GT bonnet scoops(modernised) and XA GT bonnet blackouts.

I just took a look under my bonnet and looking at the height of the boss id say it wouldnt fit under a standard bonnet. I really do hope the bulge is here to stay atleast for the fg anyway.

My suspicion is that the bulge will stay for FGII and indeed until they do a re design on the base car. Once they bring out the new body shape, the added cost of design and manufacture of the bulge and the fact that they have to carry parts for two different types of bonnet, will spell the end of the bulge.

Yeah thats a fair call, plus styles, shapes and gimmiks come and go so there will be something else.

I am going to against the grain here and say if it isn't required then remove it.
With the FG the car doesn't look sleek with the bulge sitting there. I much prefer the look of the sixes with the flatter bonnet. This is coming from someone who owned a BF2 XR8. The bulge looked better on the B series cars.

Oh I dont know, the FG XR8 (particularly in black) is a menacing yet classy looking car IMO. I dont think it looks any better or worse for having it though.

Very true, there is always something else. Working against Ford keeping the bulge if they don't need it is the fact that many are copying it. They will move to something new and fresh, not to mention not likely to require sheet metal changes which are expensive to produce.

The Taurus has a bulge and no clearance needed. It is purely a styling feature, and hopefully a desireable enough one that sells more cars.

It certainly is much nicer than just a flat bonnet.

Is that across the range or only on a particular model of taurus? I suspect it is across the range and therefore does not involve a tooling change, increased development cost and carriage of different spare parts.

Why not dump the flat bonnet and make the bulge standard across the range? Obviously it would have to be rather subtle as to not offend, but this could wait until the release of a new Falcon. Or even their entire line-up, Ford seem to have a passionate view on kinetic design.
