Default Ford Pinto Engine

I am trying to argue a point against the CAMS that the Pinto 205 block is just a replacement for the original block a Mk1 Escort RS2000 came with. I am told that there are 3 versions of the 205 block with only the latest having the extra 12kg of metal in it. The others are just Pinto replacement blocks.

Does anybody have any links with the Ford motor company such that they could answer the following???;
  1. when did supply of new original RS2000 blocks finish?
  2. what are the part numbers for the RS2000 block over time (I understand that part numbers were recycled so a newer style block used the same part number??)
  3. when did Ford stop selling new Pinto blocks (of each type)?
  4. if I ordered a Pinto block now do they stock them and what type would I be given? (Might wander to Ford dealer and place an order!!!!!)

I am trying to get a copy of Microcat to investigate but with no luck so far.

You are correct in saying that there were 3 versions of the 205 block, the Cosworth RS block, the Sierra and the early Cosworth YB block. It's correct nomenclature is T88 in Ford speak although it is referred to by several others as well.

Supply of the RS2000 blocks may have been available well into the latter part of the 80's but they were only used in the 1975 model RS2000's.

Can't help with engine numbers and Microcat (for AU) is of no use as they have archived most of the older stuff now.

There are a number of manufacturers in the US selling rebuilt ones and a few making new ones for use in various racing series where it is still the engine of choice.

Cheers Russ.

What I am hoping to prove is that the 205 block that I have (1.5" welch plugs, thin (~5mm) sump rail, large 205 number at top of block between #3 & 4 cylinders) is a direct replacement for the original block and that if somebody had tried to purchase a new block from Ford that at some point the original ones were discontinued and the '205' sold as its replacement but under the same part number.

Desperately need to be able to prove this to CAMS somehow......

I heard a while back that during 1979, FoA ran out of assigned RS2000 blocks
and they switched to German blocks with matching numbers for the remainder.

Maybe RS 2000 aficionados can confirm this.

however CAMS are right to be suspect of the 205 block over a standard RS2000 pinto block. All 205's can be safely taken out to 90 thou so they are a capacity of 2.1L. The original Pinto will only go 60 thou over bore before you risk hitting a water gallery... And in competition every advantage you can get counts...

As far as a 12kg heavier 205... that sounds more like a 200 block. I am certain no 205 block was ever that much heavier than a Pinto...

that is somewhat correct.
blocks were sourced from Germany, im not sure when exactly, but those blocks/heads have EB stamped on it.
i have an EB head, not really any different to an Aus head.

whats the engine casting numbers on the block?
if the engine casting numbers are similar could you use that to argue that point?

engine number is 85HM6015BB.

I think the key to my argument is that the part numbers of the various blocks (at least the original up to the non-super-strengthened 205) were the same.
