Default “Production Grade” Powder Coating - SYD

Can anyone recommend a service within (say) 120km of Sydney that does decent prep and coating in satin black? Not show car standard, not fancy colours - just a stout OEM looking finish to stuff like seat frames, battery brackets, outriggers.

Satin black 2K over appropriate black epoxy/etch is also an acceptable finish, but I thought powder might be the cheaper, more accessible option.

Had Blu Chrome in Eldridge rd Condell Park do a few Zinc plated parts for the Louisville. Door trim panels came out nice.
Chrome platers, zinc platers and powder coating was what they specialised in.

Couple of episodes ago on YT's "Twin Stick Garage," guy did his own small pieces using a little pie oven and paint fogger he bought.

I know Blu-Chrome well, started going there after using the Chrome Factory (you’d remember them). Didn’t realise they did powder - only had blue zinc, yellow zinc and stainless polishing done there.

Don’t want to DIY, some items are too large for a small oven and I’d still need prep outsourced.

The name rings a bell but I used to take everything to Newcastle (opp Hamilton station) but long gone now. A lot of boatbuilding stuff is still powercoated or anodised. Brookvale comes to mind.

Brooky, you probably crossed paths with Max Small, one of my TAFE teachers several decades ago. He had a powder coating side business over that way and did quite a bit of heritage building work involving stone buildings around The Rocks.

The Hunter and Illawarra aren’t too far if a business ticks the right boxes.

Probably did work on the Contemporary Arts Museum around the same time.
A lot of powercoated steel went into that one.
Had a few boat pieces anodised down in Brookvale. MTBikes however I spent lots of time strpping it to polish.

Speaking of Blu Chrome my dad did an apprenticeship there in the 60’s.
A mate has had powder coating success at Hi Octane Performance Coatings at Rydalmere.

Chrome Factory, that was in Rockdale just up behind the railway., bought some bits back in the day when chrome engine bay accessories were all the rage.

Try:

Competition Coatings in South Granville:

http://competitioncoatings.com.au/?page_id=1503

or

Hypercoatings in Penrith

https://www.hypercoatings.com.au/services

I have used the later and was happy with their job after the first was too busy at the time.

Bit of meat to chew on there, thanks. Will also see who Extreme Creations recommend, as that would likely be in Brookvale.

You might get a lead by calling custom tray, canopy and toolbox manufacturers and ask them who they use.
I know where I work now we've had to shop around a lot since covid due to price rises and backlogs.

I expect that aspect (service providers able to name their price) will soak me more than I’m imagining. Half this batch is stuff I couldn’t do last year due to schlockdown.

Hyper closed up shop earlier this year, they didn’t onsell the business. Craved Coatings seem to be gone as well.

Hi-Octane are still going, they are expecting to have new supplies of a non-Dulux answer to the textured Venom Red (Turbo cam covers) within a fortnight. Current estimated unit price $280 for walk-up sales on coating this part in such colour. Note that while this might sound a “Sydney price” there are so few undamaged ones on offer that it might actually not be that much of a stretch.

Good information. C.B.
Slightly off topic but along the same vein, a client had old Aga parts enamel restored in a bluey green finish.
Apparently re enameling steel is a real problem in Aust due to lack of skills and nanny state govs theses days. She mentioned there is only one place in Melb who'll do it but only in black but there is a place in $ydney who do any colour enameling.
I would have thought this was readily available, exhaust manifolds, headers etc high but not so.

Got an open order with Botany Powder Coating at the moment, four wheels in COB fine particle silver, looking like $750 or so to blast-prep-coat. Will report in approximately three and a bit weeks as to how they shape up.

HPC Coatings Rydalmere. Had my rotors done by them and did a brilliant job.

They’re next on my list to try. I’ve been saving up jobs since during lockdown.

I’ve received back, the wheels done in Botany. The job has run to $1300 so far including three rim repairs and two new tyres; I’ve still got to repaint the centre caps to match. Will share my thoughts below in the hope of assisting anyone else who wades in as a novice.

1. Make sure your metalwork is acceptable after blast prep. If the prep exposes pitting or rashing you thought was not bad previously, get the wheels worked up again before returning to the coating process.

2. Be prepared to remove powder coat fully from the hub contact face when done, and lightly from the centring bore. You may need to lightly seal the bore again (POR-15 will work) if you break through.

3. Be sure the chosen colour is close to actually what you expect, either by comparing an actual sample or possibly getting a touch-up can mixed in the proposed colour to spray out a sample.

4. Make certain the tyre fitters use their plastic protectors on the clamping jaws.
