Okie dokie, Ill put the flame suit on ready for some of the answers that will be coming my way, so here goes.
I heard somewhere or other that the AU and BA doors are the same. If this is true, and can be confirmed, is there a possibility of putting BA/F door trims in the AU? I know it probably wouldnt match up to the dash, but is it possible to do? Or am I being silly? Cheers guys, Josh

Well all I know is that the AU and BA both use cable to run the door handles, so would be far easier then doing it in the EA.
As to the actual door trim size I do not know, I am using EL interior with added BA handles.

There was an XE with full BA interior at the FPV day last year, so anything's possible.
And yes, the door skins on AU & BA are the same (ie outside panel), but inner skin and interior trim mounting points are different. Still, nothing a few tek screws wouldn't fix. Apart from the dash lining up issue you mentioned, the door trims should fit - but you will probably need the BA handles, cables, locks, mirror controls, power window controls etc. So, on an aesthetics front, do you really think the BA door trims are that much better than the AU ones?

I dont really think they look much better than the AU ones, as I think they look a bit plain. But maybe the Force 6 door trims or GTP ones would go OK.

I have EA locks (modified), all other parts are EA (100%) and BA handles, added the cables and brackets, the AU and BA cable are the same, but the AU cable is about 5mm or so shorter then the BA ones.

Why bother though. Yes the AU skins are bad, both to look at and use, but the BAs are no better. I had an AU Fairlane and now have a BA LTD and if the trim on the LTD is supposed to be the best this flagship car has to offer, the rest of the range must be very poor indeed. The "Skin" on the top of the LTD dash and doors has the same plastic used to cover the remote controlled dinosaur toys that clutter the floor in the kids room. Why copy toy dinosaur skin? (Just to remind me how old I am) The cheap and nasty plastics of the BA do not represent quality, they show a cutback in quality. If I were you, I'd try and go backwards and track down some door skins from an EL Fairmont (Had one of those as well) To me they looked and felt better, especially the ones with the lighter coloured interiors.

I prefer my AU interior over the Territory ... especially for feel and durability.
It's doesn't have that elephant scrotum look about it.

my old man just brought an AU2 fairmont ghia VCT on gas. I must say after owning a BA for about 4-5 months now I much prefer the AU door trims to the BA ones. This is comming from someone who owns a BA Fairmont Ghia !!

I find the SX/SY/BA/BF interior marks so much easier than the AU interior.

I'm just wondering...if the au and ba doors are the same,as I have read in all the reviews and comments here- then why not just change the whole door, and respray in your cars colour??
Might not be so expensive if you try changing all the trim, get it all wrong and then have to pay a pro to fix it all up! Or, are the main hinge/mounting points different? Doorlocks, key points etc??? I guess there could also be an issue with doorskin contour/moulding matching up. All I know is that I still hit my damn head sometimes getting into my mates ba,just the way i do getting into my au...hehehe So they must be the same!! :nutsycuck Last edited by blacklabel; 20-01-2007 at 06:32 PM. |

Only thing I can think of is the loom (I found when replacing my door actuator) ... not sure if the window and mirror looms are different though.
By the looks of things though the locks can be interchanged though.

I think where you would run into problems would be at the point where door trim and side of dash meets. AU door trim and side of dash were made to match and likewise BA door trim and side of dash. Putting BA door trims and expecting it to meet and work with the side of the AU dash....?????????
I'm sure that other things like basic shape of door, exterior door handles and the basic frame of the 2 series of door are the same but other aspects aren't the same. |
