Exclamation Locals councils say no to mobile speed cameras

Locals councils say no to mobile speed cameras
Updated November 4, 2010 14:49:00
Local councils are rejecting the use of privatised mobile speed cameras, claiming they are a cash grab by the New South Wales Government.
The number of private operators able to catch speeding motorists is being ramped up, and parking inspectors in the Gosford City Council have been told to issue fines to mobile vans found to be parked illegally, in an effort to get rid of them.
The President of the New South Wales Local Government Association, Keith Rhodes, says he supports Gosford's decision to try to ban them.
"This is simply revenue raising for dollars to go into consolidated revenue with absolutely nothing being returned to improving the conditions of the road which we all know are the factors contributing to fatalities on our major road networks," he said.
The Premier Kristina Keneally says if mobile speed camera operators break the rules they should face penalties.
Ms Keneally says speed cameras are important tools in reducing road deaths, but operators have to abide by the rules.
"If a mobile speed camera is not being operated in accordance with the law, the council should of course issue an infringement but equally so we ask all motorists to obey the rules of the road because quite frankly the life that is lost could be yours, a family member or could be devastating for someone else's family," she said.

Lets hope other Councils follow!!!

Would have to be very naive to think this will get rid of camera operators. Just another level of Government making a cash grab of its own.

The story on ACA also made reference to this website which was started in order to try and fight the use of speed cameras....

http://www.up2speedclub.com.au/

Has been formed to protect Australian Motorists rights and to force state govts into changing the antiquated, revenue biased and downright unfair system of speeding Fine detection. We are about addressing the real issues behind the carnage on our roads, giving alternatives that actually work and stopping the abuse of police power by our constabulary in the speed detection area

reading this 1st post you get the feeling that the govt would feel vindicated, if road deaths increased , they would use it as evidence of more demand for more speed cameras.

Yep. I suspect you are pretty close to the truth there.

Yep, an offer of some tidbit the council wants (oh ...lets say new air conditioners), and the 'protest' will cease.

I will support that website.

I saw a Mobile speed camera operator speeding in the friggin camera car. I contacted the RTA and complained about it, but I doubt they did anything about it.

its good to see some one saying no to the cash grabbers, the poor old motorist is an easy target, some councils are even patrolling super markets with parking inspectors down here in mexico, its almost like racism, your a motorist ..... WE WILL COME AFTER YOU ........ !!! YOU WILL PAY !!! and pay, and pay ,and pay.

Okay, up till this bit:-

Roads
We intend to force governments to adopt a patented method of coloured road markings that alert drivers to dangerous road conditions. This will also include pressure on authorities when a member points out a particularly bad piece of road in their own area.
Duh, needn't point out why this is 'dumb'.

Looks like a good website, although it looks like it just might be the fella selling a subscription for his "infringement consultancy" rather than an organised group to fight the government in numbers. Good money though at $90 a pop, especially if he expects to get 2 million members.

Although good on Gosford RE:OP
